[Closed] Insurance for a VW Transporter

I'm looking at getting a VW Transporter (probably a 2007/08 2.5TDI)and have been getting stupid insurance quotes. This will NOT be for commercial use, just for family transport. 2 kids, 2 dogs, a wife who doesn't believe in packing light and a house in France I need to take stuff to on a regular basis means I need something big, and the VW, when properly specced, is the most car-like commercial I can find.

I'm 44 and am paying £400 for an XC90 and £250 for a Passat - the best quote I can get for the Transporter is £1000 or so. Most places simply won't quote.

Anywhere decent that you can recommend?

I had the same problem with most of the main insurers: they simply wouldn't believe that a van couldn't be for commercial use. Several admitted as much and/or didn't have a rate for social, domestic and pleasure.
I ended up going with NFU, who have given me very good service for 10 years now, including dealing very well with several claims, and as a result they have won our home and contents business too. Plus they're a mutual, which gives me a bit of a warm and fuzzy.

Blower, I'm 44.

I should add that the ability to seat 7 is another need; we've got away with the XC90 for the last few years but the rear seats are too small for the kids now, other than for short hops.

The other option I'm looking at is the Discovery 3. I had one of these before, and they're great bits of kit. A lot smaller than the VW internally, but much nicer to drive, and, strangely, only £350/years for me to insure. Bizarre.

Another vote for NFU Mutual. Very cheap and amazing service.

I'm paying £26 a month fully comp for my Vito 111CDi with alloys and remap declared to them. Private use, non commercial policy, full no claims.

When I swapped vans I had a cover note for a month so I was insured on both until I sold the old one. Free. Plus I speak to a friendly person at my local branch. Excellent.

Are you getting quotes for a converted panel van or an actual caravelle? If I had 40k burning a hole I'd have a caravelle executive - would have thought they would be considered cars rather than minibuses??

Just to add - as well as the car insureres being sniffy, a lot of the van insurers also won't touch a VW, as it's got 9 seats. Seems to be neither flesh nor fish, but I see enough of the things about, so clearly someone's insuring them.

I solved this problem by getting a people mover and removing the surplus seats. Nicer features inside too.

brentacre were brilliant for my kombi, admittedly not a nine seater but still brill...

they also insure non performance increasing mods (i.e wheels, lowered springs, spoilers etc) for free as long as they're declared if thats your bag.

vwt4forum is also recommended

+1 for Commercial Vehicles Direct for our T5 Kombi. Not sure it was as cheap as £260, mind.

Brentacre for my 03 T4 39yrs old, damaged no claims! £450 on their camper policy.

I can do anything apart from more BHP as long as i inform them.

Bargain and easy to deal with plus comedy Welsh accents.. 😆

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Camper vans are pretty easy to get cover for, and the VW Kombi is fine, too, as it has a lower number of seats.

Direct Line - said no

NFU - said no

Will try Brentacre, A-Plan, Adrian Flux.

I'm insured with post office, which was suprisingly the cheapest. I live in the bad side of hell apparently and all insurance quotes are stupidly high for me. I drive a 1982 VW transporter with 10 years no claims and pay £760 fully comp with a £100 excess. ocial, domestic, pleasure and commute with wife on the insurance as well.

I drive a converted Iveco Daily campervan. It has a bulk LPG tank, gas cooker and gas water heater, and electrical system installed by my non-qualified but competent self (perfectly legal). I am 27, 1yr no claims due to not holding my own insurance but 9 years incident free driving including driving for work.

My insurance cost £339 this year for SD&P, no commuting, 10k per annum. That was with Insurance Choice. Adrian Flux were roughly double that and they knew they couldn't match my renewal before they even punched in the details. There is also someone called Frank Pickles but I wasn't eligible as all drivers must be over 30.

Why a VW? You'll be paying through the nose for that, get a test drive in a Vauxhall Vivaro...you can get them as a crewcab, and are a pretty nice drive.

When I had a van I used Zurrich.

Lovely bit of spam for breakfast....

Guessing you're insurance is sorted now or you didn't get a T5, for what it's worth I insure my 1983 Caravelle, lowered, alloys, multivan interior with Glynwoods for less than £200 a year, in fact they are cheaper than the Post Office are charging for my Octavia.
Rumor has it that although Flux are very cheap there service is rubbish if you actually need to make a claim.
