My dad used a scythe, there was a real skill to getting it sharp and getting action just right. When they combined it was a amazingly efficient tool, the feel when it cut well was effortless, there's a special sound too as the grass is cut.
Had a relative who used to cut his back garden with one years ago.
I had a half hour on the wrong end once and boy did I ache the next day. Strangely gratifying whilst being savage amusement at the same time.
Nowhere near the back breaking work that cutting and turning Peat by hand is but still something where you feel there has to be a better way of doing it.
Just been up at dads, he's got about 4 scythes in the rafters (also has stuff like hand sheep shears, peat/ditching spades etc etc from a time gone by working on Scottish farms)agree with the noise but I'd not say effortless, dad could work for ages but I had to wear gloves lubricated with vaseline/oil as my office hands would have blistered after more than about 20 mins and it killed my back.
I know which of the two I'd rather spend 35 hours a week doing 🙂
I have got one at home.
Was taught by my dad and grandad how to use it properly. You are right there is an amazing amount of skill needed. and I have only got the basics really. Need a massive back garden for it now
I really want a scythe (and learn to use one) for trimming bits of grass the sheep mysteriously leave. Silly to get the tractor in to top the odd patch and would be handy for clearing nettles when putting up the electric fence.
When I got up this morning I didn't think I'd be watching scythe videos on YouTube. 🙄
Brilliant skill to cut grass like the chappy in the vid. But he wouldn't be able to keep up that kind of pace for long. One thing I noticed was all of the grassed areas are flat. How does a scythe cope with banked verges and uneven ground?
Good skills though.
That Scythe guy was pretty irresponsible, where was his PPE?
The chap with the scythe appears to be gliding along 😯
PPE wasn't invented in the Middle Ages. 😉
Yeah, but if you had a strimmer with a 2ft blade....
PPE wasn't invented in the Middle Ages.
He could have worn chain-mail armour!
I bought one earlier this year. Still learning how to use it, but still seems quicker and less faff than a strimmer.
It's a country sport down our way. That, or a ruse to get the hay in...
Just looking up scythes for sale...oh and a machete.
