Just been reading a thread on another forum that I visit, which asked this very question. Wondered what STW thinks the outcome would have been.

Heated wing mirrors would be illegal.

We wouldn't have as much choice of beer.

i'm glad that your mate has found some success valleydaddy but from an historical point of view, the failure of d-day would not have resulted in a nazi invasion of gb.

i'm suprised that anyone has given the idea any credence whatsoever beyond an interesting plot for a fantasy drama.

The UK and Ireland would be "Judenrein".
We would be speaking German.
The Church of England is gone.
Berlin would be the political/cultural centre of our world.
There would be Tax Incentives (and land grabs) to move to Siberia.
We would be trying to make peace with USA after the 3rd World War.
If our babies weren't blond and blue eyed, we could terminate the pregnancy.
If our babies were disabled, they would be killed.
There would be a Slave culture, with Poles being of more worth then Belorussians, etc.

I could go on but none of it is good 🙁

*s****s*

i saw something on tv the other week showing navigational aids marked into the west coast of ireland that were placed by the irish to help allied aircrat during the battle of the atlantic.

propaganda on both sides of the irish sea might have favoured the suggestion of irish/german collusion but hard evidence suggests otherwise.

*edit, just remebered that the tv program was the irish episode of coast and it's probably on iplayer if anyone would like to see*

I asked the same question to myself some 16 years back after walking through the Gas chambers of Auschwitz and then a 40 min trip onto birkenau camp.
Well you would say good bye to the coloured community and asians, gypsies and disabled people
and everyone else unless you was White, Blonde and Blue eyed.

Then after that god knows.

Bloody excellent novel on just this... "The Man in the High Castle" by Philip K. Dick , written in the 60's, found in the local 2nd hand bookstore by accident while looking for another book.

Just finished reading it, and as far as thought provoking Monday morning reads go, this is up there.

Would it not have been much like say, the Baltic states after Soviet annexation? Moscow was certainly not the cultural centre of their world. That's why they were the first to split, they felt themselves occupied countries the entire time and very much kept their own identity and language. Russian was an official language though, everyone seemed to speak it and a lot of Russians migrated there - you had free movement within the USSR I think.

In any case we wouldn't have been occupied for all this time. The regime was led by a complete nutter who was able to surf a wave of populism. Either 1) the public would have got fed up and withdrawn support, 2) the public (and occupied countries) would have split and taken the war to a civil front, 3) Hitler would eventually have been assasinated or simply died and then all his ideas would have evaporated.

Stop bringing some Egyptian river into it bloodynora.

Here's another little nugget to stick in your pipe...

Any German pilots who crash landed/parachuted into Ireland were interned till the end of the war. RAF pilots were quietly and safely shipped home. tm, that was an episode of Coast. It's information that has only recently come to light.

The RoI could not have been anything other than neutral. If you knew your history bloody, you'd realise why this was, both politically and economically. In public, it was neutral. In private, it knew very well which side its bread was buttered on.

The end of 'making history' by Stephen Fry?

Or the 'utopia's in Margaret Atwood's 'Handmaiden's Tale' and 'Oryx & Crake'?

As a mental health nurse I would either be out of a job, or rounding up 'funny' people for concentration camps or worse 🙁

I have to speak up in the defence of Ireland's stance in The Emergency.

Allied pilots were officially interned, but they were allowed to "escape" and make their way to the border with NI. Also, they agreed a policy with the UK that British forces would be allowed to occupy Ireland in event of a Nazi invasion.

Good point Molgrips...

However, the Baltic States were (evidently) in the majority, Pro Nazi. If the USSR was destroyed and all of Europe Nazified, would the UK and Ireland acquiesce? Personally , I think so.

They would probably have dissolved the Union. Divide and conquer.

They would have got rid of the upper house, and probably reinstated Edward VIII.

So we might actually have had a more apparently "democratic" system, but with an unfortunate ideology (to put it mildly).

Our young men would have been decimated fighting for the [s]EU[/s] Fourth Reich on the Russian front.

I was at school with a lad who told us his dad was Estonian and old enough to serve during the war. He was in a German anti-aircraft gun crew. Allegedly he only ever shot down one aircraft, and it had black crosses on its wings...

Better than here yeah???

There would be no permissive society. Everyone would know their place, and be glad for the place they were given.

The strictest standards of 'decorum' would be upheld and this 1920s guide to etiquette would a staple of households across the land.

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/14314/14314-h/14314-h.htm

But obviously it would be altered to include the prevailing fashions in Germany such a the 'Zieg Heil' salute, and men would have to also remember to not just bow in the presence of a woman, but also have to click their heels together aswell ...

Why do you believe this to be the case?

The German work ethic is significantly better than ours. They have some great schemes to ensure kids work and not sit on their arse - I don't necessarily believe it would play out this way, but it's a thought

Margaret Thatcher would still be Prime Minister.

Eh, would that be the infamously pro-Jewish Margaret Thatcher? the one whose cabinet was 25% jewish?

In the words of the Jewish Chronicle

Cynics have attributed Margaret Thatcher’s espousal of Jewish causes, and even her friendly attitude towards Israel, to the presence of a sizable “Jewish vote” in her Fnchley constituency. Such a view is derided by those who know her well. Mrs Thatcher herself says that her closeness to the Jewish people grew from the moment before the Second World War when a young Austrian Jewish girl, Edith Muchavauer, appealed to her pen pal – the young Margaret’s sister for help. Edith had written to the Roberts family about the Nazi threat. When Alderman Roberts invited the girl to stay, his daughter Margaret learned for the first time some of the tragedies that Jews had encountered.

Lets throw in some other evidence...

according to Nigel Lawson, the former Finchley MP felt an affinity with the Jewish community.
He told the JC recently that her Cabinet included so many Jewish members, because “she was completely untouched by antisemitism. She took individuals on their own merits and recognised ability where she found it."

Or how about:

In the 1930s, a girl called Margaret Roberts (later Thatcher) was growing up in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Margaret’s big sister Muriel had an Austrian Jewish pen-friend called Edith. When Hitler’s German army occupied Austria, Edith’s worried father asked Margaret and Muriel’s parents if the Roberts family would look after his daughter.

They agreed. Young Edith escaped the tightening grip of the Nazis and went to Grantham to stay with the Roberts. Margaret remembers Edith and the accounts she gave of her life. “She told us what it was like to live as a Jew under an anti-Semitic regime. One thing Edith reported particularly stuck in my mind: the Jews, she said, were being made to scrub the streets.” (Edith eventually moved to build a new life in South America.)

Later, as Thatcher rose to the leadership of the Conservative Party, she continued to earn a reputation as a friend of the Jewish people. She was a popular MP among her constituents in Finchley (which had a high Jewish population) and was a member of the Anglo-Israel Friendship League of Finchley and the Conservative Friends of Israel. She joined in the singing of Hatikvah at a local event in 1975.

When she took the leadership of the party, Foreign Office mandarins feared her Jewish connections and support for Israel would see her viewed as “a prisoner of the Zionists” by the Arab world. Once PM, her cabinets and behind-the-scenes teams often included many Jewish politicians, prompting Harold Macmillan to quip that she had “more Estonians than Etonians”. (Not the most sensitive of punchlines, but it should be noted that Macmillan too had given shelter to Jewish refugees in the 1930s and 40s.)

Thatcher became the first serving British Prime Minister to visit Israel when she spent three days there in May 1986. (She had visited twice prior to becoming PM.)

Sort of shoots down your point really, eh Ernie 😕

Bit Confused really Ernie.. as I would have thought a more likely candidate for Prime Minister was your good mate Ken Livingstone (you know, the anti-semite you keep voting for!)

radioactive, very radioactive after the Germans and Yanks fought a limited Nuclear conflict over Europe. Assuming the yanks could buy time with the horrific logistics faced by Germany invading from across the Atlantic. I doubt that their rocketry would have come on far enough for ICBM's by the time the B29's were built.

An interesting idea of what if.......

I certainly wouldn't be here 🙁

Most likely, my Dad's side would have all been gassed for being Jewish while my Mum's Dad would have been shipped off for the Aryan breeding programme that was being arranged for the people from the right bits of France/Germany.

Quite happy it didn't turn out that way, really.

There are more than a few ways to answer this, as simply put there are several ways in which the Nazi's might not have ben defeated. But since we are talking about this country let's concentrate on events in 1940;

1. GB negotiates peace after the fall of France: Lord Halifax instead of Churchill replaces Chamberlain and negotiates a weak deal for GB which sees the USSR receive no British aid later on in the war and the possibility of the Royal Navy guaranteeing the safety of German shipping.

The outcome may well have been the defeat of the USSR, but ironically the British Empire staying around a lot longer, albeit pro-German and with Nazi sympathies.

2. Germany actually manages to successfully invade & subdue GB in Sept 1940. Mosely would have been a puppet PM, Edward back on the throne, and lot's of undesirables made to disappear.

The outcome may have seen the bulk of RN working for the Kriegsmarine and a strong German invasion of the USSR, probably later, 1942 perhaps? This would almost definitely have seen the USSR defeated. Remember the German reverses at Kursk etc in 1942 were made possible by British Intelligence passing the Russians the entire German Battle plan. Couple that with the resources of much of the British Empire to be tapped (the Indian army was massive) and no material aid from the USA to the USSR.

The comments about killing non-blond blue-eyed or Caucasian babies' are also disingenuous; the irony of the third reich is that during the war the German population swelled with people from the East and occupied western Europe. There were many slavic people amongst them, even to the point were they were put in German uniform. Whilst the Nazi's definitely had a racial heirachy in mind, it was only certain peoples they sought to completely exterminate, the rest were seen as resources to be utilised.

I'm just glad it turned out the way it did. Even if I was here my marriage to my wife would definitely have been illegal under the race laws that a BUF government led by Mosely would have passed... and I doubt that 70 years later they would have been revoked, or the Jim Crow laws in the Southern US states for that matter.

1) Godwin's Law would never have been invented. Consequently, arguments on the internet wouldn't be half as entertaining.

2) South West Trains would have exactly the same customer service policies as at present, but at least they'd stick to their timetable.

BigEared - good post. However, do you think the Nazis could have forced the defeated armed forces to fight for them?

Questions like that make me think that it was simply not possible for Hitler to conquer the UK (or indeed the rest of Europe) for long enough to make it to the present day. If it hadn't ended when it did, it would finished some other way. The timing and nature of Hitler's downfall is probably the only variable.

No p*ssing about when it comes to energy, nuke power station at the bottom of the street, object to it, doubt it because by now they will have bred objectors out of the population. Anyone raising an objection will find themselves acting as a national socialist party freedom fighter in some as yet unconverted part of the world.

Propaganda and good pay. The Nazis have discovered the evil Russian death camps for intellectuals and Polish officers.

Enlist as many idealistic young British as possible to fight the Russians and liberate the steppes. That way there are no fighting age men hanging around UK spoiling for trouble.

The Romans used that system well.

Godwin's law before the first post. Chapeau!

Life would be full of fear. Bullies would run the show. If his scientists were correct, the race would be pretty much perfect by now and we'd have massive unemployment within one generation as older workers lived (even) longer.

Quite close really, wasn't it?

We have people comparing one minister of state with a another minister of state, one of which was responsible for 60 million plus dead. In such a state where the one with the higher disregard for life won a do you think we would have chance to even think such a thought never mind post it up in public to be recorded for ever?
