We will be in touch
A guy in the office is leaving the company to go and do 12 months charity work in South America. He's a good guy and we would like to buy him a going away present.
Any ideas what he may want with about a £50 budget, ideally a bit less? He's a pretty experienced traveller and will be spending a lot of time with "locals" so the usual tourist guide is not the option I don't think.
Thanks in advance.
good knife. Always useful, kept forever etc.
I'd get him £20 worth of really worthless currency, the kind where you get lots of notes for a few quid. I'd also get him a cheap wallet. Stick a bunch of the notes in the cheap wallet and use it as a sacrificial wallet for when he gets mugged 🙂

travel clock
A bunch of 'emergency' stuff like a sink plug, travel wash, knife (as above), First Aid kit etc. And a bunch of whatever things the local kids will beg for (pens are a popular request in Africa - no idea about South America though).
A job lot of footballs? Kids love footballs all over the world.
Or a Leatherman or similar. IIRC Gerber Suspensions knock around the 35 quid mark.
Footballs?
Get him the knife and get him to puncture every football he sees over there - they are good enough as it is and we don't want them getting even better!
How about a leatherman with his name on it?
