Castle Coombe is very popular, as you say car free is a big appeal to many, 7am with artics flying past is not everyones cup of tea.
Maybe your target should be a faster lap than me at SITS
STW Lap Challenge ™ ? 😀
Looks like I might be on the Biketart team for SITS this year 🙂 pretty scared as some of the guys racing are in the elite category in xc

STW Lap Challenge ™ ?
Bring it on! I'm a competitive git.. that's what this is all about!
Perhaps we can get some 'Powered by Beans and Chorizo' jerseys made up?
Yup i agree....and for that reason i'm out for the rest of the season as i have lots planned that i need to be strong for
Aren't you already pretty lean? Personally I would not abandon it completely for the sake of racing - just modify it with carbs at the right times and of the right kind.
Cirencester is very close. I could get down to Castle Coombe on an evening as well I reckon.
Might even fit some tri bars 🙂
Yeti - no tri bars! Normal road bike or the whole hog.
That way you are not blurring the categories 🙂
I wonder if I could get down there when I'm back in Cardiff...? It'd be lovely to race against people I actually know.
So how can I scientifically measure my body fat percentage? And easily? Years ago it was calipers on key areas but I am sure there is something more scientific around now?
Yea.. i'm game.
How about entering one of the thursday night crit races? they are on every thurs until august i think
Callipers is still the most widely used, there are those pod things now you sit in but I don't imagine many places have them.
I'd love to do a crit. I reckon as an MTBer I'd have a good edge, it must be like the first lap of Mayhem 🙂
You mean at Castle Coombe? I'm not around until August as you know...
Re BF I was told by a Sports Physiology professor at UWIC that the best simple way was callipers. Although far from ideal anything more accurate was much more complicated.
Can I also have a go on that please Hugh? I've ALWAYS wanted to try one 🙂
moly (if its ok to call you that?)
Are you looking to improve your finish in the Cardiff 10?
when you back molgrips in time for this?
EDIT: Just seen your post, when in August there's a Wednesday night TT on the 10th

It actually doesn't start that fast.. many people can hide quite easily in these races and finish in the bunch. it's if you want to break away or compete in the sprint finish is the difficutly
Castle Coombe is very wind affected (aren't we all) down to it's open nature, was a tough night on the first Kinetic One night a couple of weeks ago, so Im told.
Yep.. the wind is ridiculous. you become obsessed with wind with these races/TT's I find
Interesting... very interesting.
*wonders if the CTW scheme they're putting in at work covers TT bikes*

Hmmm, I have a mixed opinion. TSY can give you his unbiased opinion as i'm generally too hard on myself...and i'm also still adapting to being 'heavier' - last year i was getting to the stage where a size 8 was too big for me, so how i am now feels bulky even though i know its not 🙂 Currently 2kgs heavier than my usual weight but i've set lots of pbs this year and it seems to relate to how much i eat. If i was just racing, it would be easy to do right carbs and the right times but just now - ie between races - i'm working hard/lots and stressed out, exercising 6 days a week and its unpredictable i.e i can be planning a morning session but then end up going at lunch/evening or vice versa.
I'm going to try it again in the autumn once i have things out of the way. Until then its carb and chocolate and biscuit heaven for me!
Crit racing - try it for sure! I learnt tons from the one i did this year and will be back next year to do all four (and yes, i can still remember saying that i would never do one again!) 😆
the best simple way was callipers
This is true. There are different ways of taking the measurements and different formulas for the maths so make sure you use the same person if having it done more than once.
Other than that Hydrostatic weighing is quite accurate. The ultimate is a DEXA scanner - they have one at Bath Uni but unfortunately won't let you pay to use it.
Should be back by 2nd or 3rd probly. My calendar is looking pretty packed.. and Mrs Grips will be nearly ready to pop by then..!
I'll have to assess the situation nearer the time, but I'd like to do one of these. Yes Hugh, I will definitely do some more Cardiff 10s if they haven't finished by then.

What's the point of that? Surely it's death or glory in these things?
What are the tactics anyway? If I ride in the bunch until the last 10 mins then put the hammers down, everyone'll do that surely? So it would just get mental....

I suspect that's not a bad strategy.. lose weight over the winter, maintain over the summer....
Oh yes - thats something i also worked out - trying to lose weight when i'm pushing myself hard isn't good either! So again, autumn/winter would be good for me, plus i always lose weight in the winter too!suspect that's not a bad strategy.. lose weight over the winter, maintain over the summer....

Because (and i've only done crit races at castle comb) no one seems to want to put the effort in bar a few.. U can't go all out from the gun, it just won't work. Also doesn't matter if you are the strongest rider there and can TT like a bitch you can't just drive off the front and think you'll win.
Yes, it is a crazy sprint at the end.. the start finish straight is very long after the last corner and everything starts ramping up massively. I can sprint up to around 35/36 mph from that last corner but i cannot sustain it for minutes like the other guys.
which way do they loop TD, the same as tuesday nights?
Phil.W Yep
Althoug i'm majorly hacked off as i damaged my shoulder on a stag last week which has put me out of action for a bit. THis was just as things were getting interesting (lots more of us from the club racing and forming some tactics so more chance of points/top 10)
Sorry idave.. this thread has derailed
trying to lose weight when i'm pushing myself hard isn't good either!
You probably gain weight from muscle anyway.
I thought crits were as many laps as possible in the time, not a fixed number of laps..? That'd change tactics.. are you saying that there's fixed laps and it's all out from the last corner like a TdF finish or one of those head to head track races?
It's normally 45 mins + a lap for these crits. Also we set off just before the elites (there are 2 races not handicap) and they have to get through us.
The other week we were actually gaining on them and had to slow it down as the car was between us
Hm sounds like MTBing.
Hm sounds like MTBing.
believe me.. it's nothing like it!
FWIW i actually prefer road racing to xc racing as there's more to it and a great team atmostphere (if u ride fora club)
but i prefer mountain biking when not racing
Hmm.... tri bars allowed?
Yeah I have wanted to try road racing for ages. And track racing.
Er.. for racing? no way.. you'd probably get lynced
Also.. if you're not used to riding in a group/bunch then beware. Lots of tri guys turn up at these things that can't ride for toffee: not holing their line in chicanes.. moving out without looking etc)
TSY can give you his unbiased opinion
Haha... you say I don't need to, and I'd say that I've got more to lose than you. Still think you should give the diet a go though, but without thinking it's low carb. That and you should probably eat stuff that has had eyes or fur.
I reckon I need to pick up some fast group social rides before hitting the race scene. Only had a road bike for a couple of months!
Er.. for racing? no way.. you'd probably get lynced
I was gonna say, I would hope not 🙂 I'd be a little concerned about the bunch riding thing.. I mean I can handle a bike and I've done a few group rides, but not many.
That and you should probably eat stuff that has had eyes
Yeti potatoes are out, have you learned nothing?
Pop out for a few hours and miss several pages.....you lot have been busy.
Oh and TSY, stop bitching. You weight is fine for your height.
Never! That and you should probably eat stuff that has had eyes or fur.
That's the best offer i've had all day! 😀Step into my office
*sent from my sofa where i'm eating pasta nom*
I wish I had a decent climbing wall near me.
Bah.
....and humbug.
They must have one somewhere near you? Doesn't the Uni have one?
There're 4 not too far away from here? 😕
Shall we see who can climb the longest tonight yeti?! 😛

Only one local is a converted squash court and is pretty poor, plus last time I went the guy running it was a nob.
Shame as I am awesome at it 8)
heh... Total meters climbed? Toughest route topped out?
I'm reckoning I'll last two hours but I won't be doing any of that half hearted standing around belaying someone rubbish, I'll be hard out bouldering until I rip through the skin on my fingers.
Lol. 3 hours of climbing and belaying ripped my hands to shreds last time....and its not half hearted when i have to be clipped to a sandbag for belaying and catch mustard three times in a row! We'll see whats hardest in june! I don't know how we can measure tonight given the distance between us though, and you might be finished before we even start tonight!
Intervals. Hard when you do them, feels like nothing when you stop, and then when you get home and have a shower it hits you.
Read in the Standard tonight that Jensen Button weights 72kg and is 6 feet tall. Now that's lean 🙂 I'm the same height and did manage 78kg once back in the day, currently 86kg 😯
