Given the unsurprising silence from the BBC* on this, I think it deserves an opportunity for airing here.
After Dear Gordon did his standard-issue dirge to the EU Parliament yesterday, a right-wing MEP got a chance to make a follow-up speech to the assembly.
Now, deadlydarcy, TJ, SFB, Grizzly, noteeth etc, Im perfectly happy for you to wade in here**, and indeed you can play the man or the ball as you see fit, but in the UK it's virtually unheard of for any elected opposition voice to be given a platform to directly attack the government and it's prime minister with language unrestricted by parliamentary convention, let alone to use it with such eviscerating potency.
The video is only 3 minutes long so you'll only lose the briefest moments of your life if you watch it. 🙂
* comments section on BBC European reporter Mark Mardell's blog emphasise the lack of BBC coverage.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/markmardell/2009/03/eurogordon_steps_into_line.html
** Dan Hannan has plenty of meat for you to get your teeth into.
*Pulls up a chair*
Too early for a drop of claret? Hmm.
haha! he's ****ing fantastic!!
And Gordon sits there chuckling away.
far too early.
Earl Grey now.
A nice Loire red after 18:00 hrs 🙂
He sounds exactly like an Oxbridge student debater in the Union. 😀
Regardless of the truth or otherwise of any of it, it cannot be conducive to good EU government to have partisan UK-centric squabbling going on on the floor of the European Parliament, can it?
*Checks yardarm*
You're right, you know.
Slice of lemon in mine, if you wouldn't mind.

And Gordon sits there chuckling away.
Surely someone has told him that there are better ways to bear yourself when it is likely that you are to be on screen? It's really rather embarassing to see him, as the representative of the UK, do that leering grin.
Excellent, thanks for that.
Captain, laughing like a chimp and scribbling notes while your oponent is speaking is standard University debating stuff too. That really is the level. Statesmanship it ain't. 🙂
Why would someone having a go at Brown upset the left wingers?
That was funny!
bloody-hell, I dont know how many mountain bikers give a fig about politics but in the last 25 minutes the "watched" counter on you tube for that clip has gone from 36,000 to 79,000! 😯
Already seen it. I'm no friend of el Gordo - look at his cheery self-delusion...! But neither do I care much for oleaginous Tories... 😈
Simply pointing out that the horse has bolted is a rather different thing from actually running the stable. We'll see, I guess.
I put it on my Twitter... I'm well followed.
Amen to that, so true too. That's why I'm leaving as soon as I get a degree.
Simply pointing out that the horse has bolted is a rather different thing from actually running the stable. We'll see, I guess.
very true, comrade. But the "pointing out" is so much more fun when the target continues to be so beligerently arrogant about his lack of culpability or humility in the matter.
Odd to see GB not able to front up to this, no authority in reverting to false grins and doodles in the face of this sort of criticism.
Imagine how Thatcher would have handled this, without getting caught up in a pro-or-not Thatcher debate, ever her most ardent critics would recognise the strength of a conviction politician in adversity versus one focussed purely on the possibility of being elected properly for a change.
Whilst I admire the speech, it does make us look bad on the global stage when the leader of our country sits there with a stupid grin. I would actually prefer a more US like stance where we might have differences on the domestic political stage but in public on a global/Euro stage maybe we should be more united behind the occupant of No 10 - even those of us who hope he moves soon !
Problem is we've either got Labour: (now) right wing and heading more so, or the Conservatives: right wing.
No left wing in sight. The right bashing the right.
It would be better if they just stuck to bashing the bishop!
Wow, powerful stuff (s****). Idiot plays party politics at the expense of UK prestige in EP. Backed up by strong counter policies by his own party back home - not.
No wonder Brown was chuckling. Gave it the contempt it deserved. Nice to see him getting something right.
'Tory MEP talks shite and is selective about the truth' shocker.
Whilst I admire the speech, it does make us look bad on the global stage
Have some respect! We look exactly like any small, bankrupt country should.
I eagerly await "Government by blogosphere" - inwhich PMQs is replaced by a series of snide exchanges and petty insults. Heavy on just moaning about stuff and short on actual solutions, it will mark the final triumph of paranoid tin-foil hattery-****tery - e.g. the socialists want to control your garden lawn, the right wants to privatise your grandmother etc etc ad nauseum. Forever.
ad nauseum, ad infinitem
rubbish education you get at some universities these days eh? 🙂
Idiot plays party politics at the expense of UK prestige in EP.
fair play to that particular idiot, he actually holds the forum in which he spoke in contempt so he probably couldnt give two hoots what was thought of the UK on that stage.
Sounds like a true patriot
rubbish education you get at some universities these days eh?
Forever or ad infinitem - whichever is longer.
Sheesh, these fen-dwellers... it's like you have to explain everything. Twice. 8)
Sounds like a true patriot
The mythical island in his head...
He sounds exactly like an Oxbridge student debater in the Union.
I kept expecting him to move onto "history today" - that's you that is, Gordon !
slow hand clap for alwyn,
its the like of you that make this country what it is today.
slow hand clap for alwyn, its the like of you that make this country what it is today.
In fairness, I'm happy to see all the emigrees go. Who needs all that negativity ?
Marvellous stuff from Hannan- why isn't Cameron getting stuck in like this back in Blightly?
Given the unsurprising silence from the BBC* on this,
I haven't checked, but have ITV/ Sky etc given any greater coverage of this?
Good speech though.
Of course, let's not forget the current record holder for a UK political video on YouTube....
[url=
little snack during PMQs
Totally SFW, but best not to watch if you're just tucking in to a tasty dinner.
Its on a Sky blog now, so at least on their radar. Robinson and Mardell have simply avoided discussing it despite the comments on their news blogs. Nowt on ITN yet though. For equality's sake then I shall pitch my ire at all the mainstream media then 🙂
why isn't Cameron getting stuck in like this back in Blightly?
Minor party members sniping from afar is one thing, Cameron having to support his attacks on the weight of his own flimsy ideals is quite another. Lets face it, if the opposition was worth anything at all, this govt. would be out on it's ar5e already.
The thought of Lord Snooty and his pals running the country is the best election weapon Brown has.
The thought of Lord Snooty and his pals running the country is the best election weapon Brown has.
CFH, 5, 4, 3, 2.... 😀
Don't worry about him. He's been on the claret since 4.30.
Quote : I know it will bring out the left-wing flamers
Doesn't really seem to have done that - has it ?
However ......... representing a party which is completely incapable of coming up with any constructive alternatives to this government failed economic policies. And mindful that the sh1t which Britain finds itself in today is to a very large extent the result of previous Tory governments disastrous policies, CaptainFlashheart is compelled to offer nothing more than a video of someone picking their nose.
That was predictable.
someone picking their nose
More stylish than fiddling whilst Rome burns, no?
To fiddle or to pick - surely, one of the great political questions of our age.
smiling stupidly in the face of criticism seems to be our Glorious Leader's way of coping.

smiling stupidly in the face of criticism seems to be our Glorious Leader's way of coping.
I don't know, perhaps he can see the hypocrisy of including Lafarge and EU in the same sentence.
To fiddle or to pick - surely, one of the great political questions of our age.
Can't think of anything more important
The facts seems to indicate that quite a few are on the fiddle ......
Wahey!
BTW, notwisthstanding the politics of the matter, the fact that the mainstream media havent been reporting on the speech when there has been a wide interest on the internet is probably just as an important issue.
"daniel hannan" is ranked 79th in today's US google hottrends list.
http://www.google.com/trends/hottrends
out of interest do you think having a greater proportion of "reporting" undertaken by the marginal media online is a benefit to the objectives of the Fourth Estate to keep our leaders in check, or will it just lead to greater volumes of flimsy editorialising rather than wider coverage of news?
Wow, sticking me in there with TJ, gg and the likes? I'm honoured, thanks. So, I was baited onto watching it. FFS, yawn. He said nothing that the liberals haven't been saying for the last eighteen months, only that he chose the stage of the European parliament to air a fairly personal attack on his prime-minister. How embarassing! I'm trying to think of something comparable and that oft used sketch show angle of a married couple airing their differences in front of cringing guests at a dinner party comes to mind. We're generally a bit of a laughing stock in Europe as it is, largely because our electorate can't be bothered sending any decent MEPs through lack of interest. Seems it's the right wing, largely having lost the faith and respect of the electorate, that are motivated to put the likes of Hannan into Brussels.
Daniel Hannan, educated at Marlborough and Oriel, so yes folks, we've all got lots in common with this Tory boy. Remember that while you're slapping the smarmy git on the back. I'm not sure whether I'm happier for him to embarrass us on the European stage or launching his attacks across the floor of the commons. Frankly, he's not fit to polish Dennis Skinner's shoes after that display.
Fine public speaker though. I believe he was quite the Oxford Union chap...that fine bastion of relevance.
Pah...doodle away Gordon, show him the lack of respect he deserves.
mainstream media havent been reporting on the speech when there has been a wide interest on the internet is probably just as an important issue.
"daniel hannan" is ranked 79th in today's US google hottrends list.
Tell me you're joking - you really expect news broadcasters to report on a video because it's number 79 on the "US google hottrends" (whatever that is) ?
And since when have MEPs speeches made the news headlines ? In fact, how many people give a toss about MEPs ?
Furthermore, with the contempt which presumably Daniel Hannan feels for the European Parliament, I think it's rather fitting that not much importance has been attached by the "mainstream media" to the rantings of an obscure member of the European Parliament.
Agree gg. I do get riled by these right wing cabals in Brussels. On a platform of supposedly parliamentary reform, all they do is subvert the process continually. Wasn't Hannan the guy who caused some change in the rules because of filibustering during debates on the Lisbon treaty? What a tosser
Tell me you're joking - you really expect news broadcasters to report on a video because it's number 79 on the "US google hottrends" (whatever that is) ?
not at all.
News is what the people consider to be newsworthy, not what they get told is.
Hannan's video has been watched 260,000 times today all over the world. Not because it shows gordon picking his nose, but because of the lucid assault on Gordon's legacy and personality. Whether or not Hannan's attack has merit or not is immaterial, it represents an oppositional attack on the government, it should be reported, it hasnt been reported, but it is being watched regardless.
You're getting hung up on the content Gus. That's not really the reason I posted, its the frankness of the piece and the way in which it has been championed so widely in such a short space of time regardless of the mainstream media's lack of coverage which makes it interesting.
Hannan is also Glorifying himself too.
He is known for being outspoken but convinces nobody.
Daniel Hannan, educated at Marlborough and Oriel, so yes folks, we've all got lots in common with this Tory boy.
Almost as much as we have in common with somebody educated at Fettes and St John's, or even those with a PhD from Edinburgh!
I wasn't necessarily comparing him with anybody else but if you feel the need to, fire away. Though I assume you refer to GB? If so, then yes, I have a hell of a lot more in common with him than the smarmy tosser who is the subject of this thread.
Or indeed someone who went to Tupton Grammar School, and Sheffield University followed by Ruskin College at Oxford (not part of the Uni).
aka Dennis Skinner 🙂
Hannan's video has been watched 260,000 times today all over the world........... because of the lucid assault on Gordon's legacy and personality.
Who says so ?
I've watched it.
Not because "of the lucid assault on Gordon's legacy and personality", but because some punter on a forum posted it and told me to watch it.
And I'm sure that I don't need to tell you that I think Hannan is an inconsequential plonker who's talking shite.
Yes his video appears to have had a lot of hits. Presumably that's because spotty faced tory-boys up and down the country have been posting links to it on the various forums/blogs whatever, which they frequent.
.
no offence like 🙄
You ad-hommed him on the basis of his education though - simply pointing out that wasn't necessarily a clever argument (though I suppose I should let off those without the benefit of an Oxbridge education on that score 🙄 )I wasn't necessarily comparing him with anybody else but if you feel the need to, fire away.
Curious on what basis you're asserting that? Have you got a PhD from Edinburgh, or are you the PM of an almost bankrupt country?I have a hell of a lot more in common with him than the smarmy tosser who is the subject of this thread.
p.s. Not all my references were about the same person.
p.p.s. How's the mapping, Stoner?
spotty faced tory-boys
and we've even met. that is low. I have a lovely complexion and I dont vote tory... 🙁
Not because "of the lucid assault on Gordon's legacy and personality", but because some punter on a forum posted it and told me to watch it
Im flattered I have had such a dramatic effect on your evening's entertainment Gus 🙂
I have no problem with your view on his plonkerishness.
But I bet you a pint of OJ & Lemonade that it will make the news tomorrow, and regardless of his politics, the speech will be held up as a fine example of polemicism.
aracer - completely forgot to unwrap my present.
will go and have a play.
well it crashed vista, so Im off to bed 🙂
I'll have another go tomorrow.
Gus - we shall resume pleasantries tomorrow....
Simply pointing out that the horse has bolted is a rather different thing from actually running the stable.
Plenty were actually pointing out the stable door didn't seem to be secured properly at the time. Maybe if they'd been in charge we wouldn't be in quite the same s**t we are now?
well it crashed vista
That's what it was developed under (though with a non-Vista compliant compiler) 😕
I agree with aracer. I also couldnt quite believe the arrogance of Brown to sit there laughing, doodling on a pad while thousands at home are losing their jobs on a daily basis. After putting us in almost a trillion pounds of debt.
I have copy pasted the link into an email and passed it on, I urge you all to do the same. Methinks this farce has gone on long enough.
I agree with aracer.
Which bit? 😯 I try my hardest not to express too much in the way of opinions on these threads nowadays.
I have a lovely complexion and I dont vote tory
Not you mate. 'Tory-boy' is not a label which I would attach to you. But I'm sure however, that there are plenty of spotty faced tory-boys up and down the country wetting their pants, frothing at the mouth, and squealing in delight, at the sight of a video of Gordon Brown being denounced publicly in the European Parliament by a British MEP.
.
But I bet you a pint of OJ & Lemonade that it will make the news tomorrow
Well then out of the window will go your argument that it's been ignored by mainstream media. What will your complaint then be ?
aracer, no need for patronisation. I'm happy enough with my level of education, and it's none of your business either. On principle, I was referring to Brown's political principals, not his educational background. Didn't realize I needed to be more succinct. I'll try harder in future.
I try my hardest, and irony still doesn't come across in the written form 🙄aracer, no need for patronisation. I'm happy enough with my level of education
Well maybe when your original reason for having something in common or not with somebody is to do with their education, you should point out when you've changed tack to ignore the point. I suppose "Daniel Hannan, has different political principles to me, so yes folks, we've all got lots in common with this Tory boy" might not have had quite the impact you were after.Didn't realize I needed to be more succinct. I'll try harder in future
Thanks for your input.
Well, the merry go-round continues.
party switch for council leader
So we have one right-wing politician attacking another in the EU parliament and now one leaving one right-wing party for another. Politicians, don't you just love them?
(yes Stoner this story did appear on the BBC news website, so it'll probably confirm in your mind that the BBC are run by left-wing trotskyites )
No. of views: 637,625
That is news.
Still nothing on Guardian, BBC, BBC Blogs, or Sky.
An article on the Telegraph, natch, he does blog for them.
Well then out of the window will go your argument that it's been ignored by mainstream media. What will your complaint then be ?
My argument was that it wasnt picked up at the time of Gordons turgid speech. For it to become a story through becoming an internet viral phenomenon though will just make the mainstream media look like idiots anyway.

errr.
Not seen this on the news today.
Though there was a cat stuck up a tree.
He does a good speech. It's just a shame that no one gives a fig about MEPs apart from their accountants and bank managers.
Which is strange given that our national government has so little say in so many areas of our law.
I am sorry, this is a very good thread in many ways, but I'm still laughing at this: I'd just pretend that [Caroline Flint] was one of the Corrs.
Always the serious issues with you isnt it BD? 🙂
My favourite quote of late is from SFB on one of your threads:
"How the hell can you tell when a chicken is coming?"
I also couldnt quite believe the arrogance of Brown to sit there laughing, doodling on a pad
What should he have done?
striptease.
Dance
rattatata, rattatat, yeah!

What should he have done?
Not provided the ammo in the first place?
He did the right thing. He treated it with the contempt it deserved.
