These are sites that amalgamate freely available information from various internet sources to provide interested parties with an overall picture of a particular domain.

The information is already out there, these sites just make people's searches easier. There could be any number of reasons people might be using them to run queries against your domain.

Thanks, I know the info is freely available and nothing personal is being looked at, the Whois page doesn't have my personal details. It appears to be info that the competiton would be interested in or could it be more sinister??

Anyone smart with malicious intentions would certainly do their research before establishing their malicious intent. If I were hacking a website it's exactly the thing I'd start off with. I'd try and find out about the owner and his associations, get all the info on him. If I could get names and email addresses from whois I'd do a facebook, linkedin and twitter trawl. I'd try and find other websites on the same servers to determine all the avenues of attack and all this information is extremely useful for social engineering attacks. If I appear to know a lot of stuff about someone and am confident, people will give me a lot more information about that person.

Obviously someone going to all that trouble is a professional and will be extremely difficult to track down. He'll be careful and methodical and take his time.

I'm confident it's nothing like that, but it does show how open we are in this technowhatsit age. I wish I'd listened to my computer studies teacher now, possibly there was a future for CECIL!!! 😆
