I went to uni with a guy called Greig, one of our fellow students asked him how he slept his name, he told her and she advised him 'that can't be right'.

Erm, you're a bit late on that. "I before E" was dropped from the curriculum some time* ago, as there are more exceptions to the rule than there are adherances.

*can't remember when.

It depends on your accent.

The h on honour [i]should[/i] be silent, in which case "an honour" is correct, but if you pronounce it "honnar" then "a honour" would work.

Same with "hotel" or "historical"

Actually, the 'rule' was 'i' before except after 'c', when the sound is 'ee'. I think most of that list are exempted because of that, of course there are still exceptions but fewer.
