If it's not got the lastest software, upgrade that before you do anything else. I'd think they'd all be shiping with the latest now though as the update came out in November or so.

What grunty said.

Not only is the Desire miles better, it's virtually brand new compared to the Hero, which is approaching a year old at this point.

Even better, T-Mobile are offering the Desire on some stonking deals.

But the Desire is larger, more difficult to cart around.
Have you actually used one ?

I have a T-Mobile MDA Vario III at the mo, so from experience I am used to the size. In fact, it will be nice to have something a little smaller! ;o))

Moses - courtesy of Google's surprising generosity I have a Nexus One, virtually identical to the Desire bar cosmetic changes and HTC's Sense UI. I used to have a Hero before. Believe me, get the Desire.

Put all your contacts & calendar items into your (or a new) Google (Gmail) account.

The phone can then download all your info & sync emails when you input your details - this is one of the first things it asks you to do when you switch it on for the first time, getting it right first go makes life a lot easier later!

Then go hunting for the apps that make owning a phone like that worth the effort: http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/0,39029453,49302740,00.htm - for starters.

Hey nice one Flaperon - I use OS map and like it

If only I could get a 3G signal throughout all of the 'interesting' bits of the UK

🙂

What is T-mobile like as a provider? (in the south west particularly)

I have heard bad things, currently with o2, the Desire is with T-Mobile and Vodafone only it seems on contract.

I could shell out £400 on a sim free one but i'm not in that much of a hurry to get one!

Flaperon - I read reviews stating the at the desire doesn't run noticeably faster with its better processor. Is this true? Still, worth having if it doesn't cost any more. Hero is 'apperently' being updated to 2.1 in april.

T-Mobile and Orange coverage about the same in the South West. However, both infinitely better than Vodafone or O2 in this region.

Busy cities? All about the same.

In terms of speed, I've run the Desire ROM on my Nexus One and it's noticably faster than the Hero. What people are noticing is that very rarely things stutter for a second or two (eg, scrolling in lists) which happens on both the Hero and Nexus One / Desire.

However, for web browsing the Nexus One leaves both the Hero and iPhone 3GS for dust.

It should be getting an update from android 1.6 to 2.1 including htc sense very shortly (could be out already, non official ones certainly are). T-mobile are releasing the update on the 16th of april for their G2 touch. Should add some nice functionality such as sat nav and other things that I can't remember right now.

Oh and if you're out and about with it a car charger comes in handy as with most smart phones.

Try Rmaps.

Better than OSmap imo cos it allows caching for when you are out of signal areas.

p.s. I've also tried the Desire ROM on my Nexus one and it's really nice (in fact I'd keep it over the standard nexus rom, if only everything worked on it (a few little things don't work due to it being a pre-release rom/for a different device)).

glenh - when I get some time I'll be adapting the source code of RMaps to make OS Map 2. I'll strip out all the Russian stuff and implement my waypoint system, and perhaps turn the caching up a bit more. It does mean that my app will go GPL, but worse things have happened. 🙂

Have been using one for a couple of months and think it is great.

Already been a couple of threads on here

http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/htc-hero-apps-recommdations

and
http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/htc-hero-tips

Which I found useful

Twidroid as a Twitter reader, Chomp SMS for texts and most importantly advanced task killer to keep excess programs from running and messing up battery life.

My tracks is a gps app that gives you details of where and how far/fast you have been - I have found it really useful for tracking training rides

use the widgets for Bluetooth/GPS/wifi and only switch them on when you need them - again saves battery life.

Come summer the app from Google that shows and identifies the night sky ( and shifts to match where you are looking 0 will give me endless opportunities to annoy the family

Other than that have a play and when you have a look to the home screen ( all 7 sections of it ) remember to save it or be prepared to set it up from scratch again if you forget and reset.

The HTC Legend (Hero on steroids) will be out soon 😀
I'm quite pleased with my HD2, I like Windows Mobile, and it allows me to run Memory Map.
