Start at bottom and pull gently it will just be held down with ggripper rods, small lengths of timber with lots of nails, daft but mark the bottom of the carpet as if you try to fit it the other way up it will not look right.

Re fitting start from top.

need to paint by the sides of the stairs and they are wood it doesn't help that its brown paint (thanks to previous owner) and we want it white !, no way masking tape is going to work !

Painting a string around carpet is a PITA...personally, if it's a new carpet or not due for replacement anytime soon, I'd remove it but maybe find a mate of a mate who fits carpet who'd fit it back for the price of a few pints - would only take him a few minutes if it's already cut. Failing that, do it yourself - a nice wide, blunt bolster will do for pushing it in to corners.

No way that stuff (good as it is for wall painting, plastering etc.) will protect the edges from painting the strings.

EDIT: crossed edits with trail_rat. 🙂

As trail_rat says...but here's a diagram in case you have to ask any more questions. The least you could do is FIND OUT THE BLOODY NAMES OF THE DIFFERENT PARTS!! 🙄

I've done a few stair cases with these, worth having a set to do skirtings anyway.
