Right now i am getting about 530kbps download and 268 upload.I am on aol silver and the test here shows out of ten web pages.. the average time for each to open is 9.5 seconds.once midnight comes its worth having a surf of the net but at this hour? what a joke. The best i get is about 1.5mb and thats about the best for most providers in the area.

http://www.loadingtest.com/

I pay for upto 8mb speeds but i know that ive never got anywhere near that. I remember years ago getting about 5.most of the time i get around 1.3mb late in the eve or early morning.

anyone else on aol getting next to nowt?

This is about 3 miles from centre of Inverness.

Ive closed down aol and all aol gremlins running in the background (that i know of) and opened up IE. I now get between 0.8 & 1.1mb.

capital of the highlands.. still 20 years behind as with everything else.
aviemore has 5mb at lunchtime and thats a wee village up in the hills.

2.19s, 4280kbps, 365kbps.

The website loading appears to be a rubbish speed test though - highly dependent on what use you make of those sites (hence how much needs to be downloaded), and what you've looked at recently. What's more, that site seems not to have heard of Chrome!

is the usual standard test I'd rely on (I suppose it's a good sign that the other one gives very similar numbers, but when I tried it again I got much worse ones!)

...obvious what ISP I'm with from that, but also 3/4 of a mile from a relatively uncongested exchange - things that are normally far more important to the speeds you get than the ISP you're with. Comparing figures is only at all relevant with somebody else on the same exchange.

show off, adrian! (i just pictured myself in that indian slum with kevin macleod? as you look down yer nose from a skyscraper on its outskirts)

bleh.

djglover, its the time for renewal and they are offering the next 3 months for £10. then back to £19.99 a month.

I think new members get it for £14.99 but if you arent in a certain area, then all they can offer is the £19.99 deal.I think thats hows it stands right now.

"Offer ends 28/03/2010. Minimum 18 month contract. This offer is available to new customers or existing customers using AOL Anytime dial-up service. Credit card/debit details required. Subject to BT line and availability. This offer is only available in selected areas. If you can't get this offer, you may still be able to get AOL Broadband Wireless but you will be charged £9.99 for the first 3 months, then £19.99 thereafter.

Fastest speeds I get using ANY of the internet speed testing sites (which all seem about the same to me)...

DL: 2576kbps
UL: 658kbps

That's paying for a 20Meg serivce through Sky...

To be fair to Sky though, I got on the net to have a look what other people in my area are getting. It seems even though Worcester is a fairly sizable city, that it has a crap telecoms infrastructure compared to most other places. Unless you live right in the town centre (where you can get 5-6Meg DL if you're lucky) that to even get the 2.5Meg DL I get is amazing! Most people seem to be getting between 1 and 1.5Meg outside of the town centre!

Bit of a joke if you ask me...

3 years ago in a Village just outside of Coventry I was getting 6.5Meg DL speed, so why in a decent sized city is it so bloody poor?

Read what I wrote a bit further up. I'm not very far away from you, but in a small village with an exchange with a fraction of the connections compared to any of the Worcester city ones (and getting as much as 6Mbps). Worcester does seem to be notoriously bad - a survey in work last week suggested nobody was getting better than 3Mbps.

But that was to my computer here in Canada.

Poor speeds are probably down to ally cables that were used for a short period instead of copper when prices went silly. BB doesn't like it, they are bad enough for speech as they just corrode into white dust!

but also 3/4 of a mile from a relatively uncongested exchange - things that are normally far more important to the speeds you get than the ISP you're with.

In my experience, village exchanges (bearing in mind that normally only villages right out in the sticks will have their own exchange) are often the more congested due to lack of demand to justify investing in it. A bigger exchange is more likely to be upgraded before it nears full capacity as otherwise you get the situation where customers/ISPs are unable to apply for BB connections, and that's a bad thing in anyones book!

If your broadband speed varies and suffers during 'rush hour' then the exchange is the limiting factor, if your line is just slow all the time, its line quality.

I can beat that MArtyn - I'm on BT Broadband (Option 3) - and apparently I can get up to 8Mb - up until 3 weeks ago I wasn't getting 512Kb (in fact I was lucky to get 256Kb) downloads and about 412Kb uploads - I did have 1 week of 81Kb connection speed.

Anyway, I got a BT Iplate and this basically connects the home wiring direct to the BT master socket test connector (which apparently goes straight to the exchange) - I'm now getting just over 2Mb connection speeds - huge difference. Nothing else has changed.

If you are using traditional phone lines then your service will be using BT somewhere so the Iplate may help you as well - easiest way to check is to find the master socket in the house (the one where your phone line comes in from outside) - remove the front plate and see if you have a 'spare' phone socket visible - if so, plug you router and phone line into that and leave it for 15 minutes or so - then try it - should be much quicker but don't know by how much.

The Iplate can be bought from BT - BT Accelarator or something it is called - http://www.shop.bt.com/products/bt-iplate---bt-broadband-accelerator-58LT.html - check to make sure your master socket is compatible before you purchase it.

Good luck, I'm right on the very edge of the 5Km distance form the exchange - the exchange was one of the first built in the area so is very old and uses the old style cabling and non-digital solutions that the modern exchanges now use, so I suspect even getting the 2Mb is aserious achievement for me and my location - all the neighbours have similar problems so I know it isn't just my house.

With that iPlate thing, it can take up to five days for the exchange to detect the reduced noise/interference, and increase the speed. Its unlikely to be an instant speed increase.

Also, the latest sockets already have the iplate built in 🙂

Spooky, they say give it 24 hours to start noticing a difference but mine was instant i.e. as soon as I conencted the phone/router to socket and connected to the web...instant fix...it probably should take a bit of time but I found the time adjust was zero...

Bah, internet slugs... 1.19 second average load time

Demonstrates the diminishing returns on speed though.
As I'm at a third of your speed, but only 0.27 seconds slower.

There is definitely an upper limit where your own speed doesn't matter and you're waiting for the other bits (intial connection, DNS lookup, web server response etc) especially on smaller sites with less infrastructure.

Still... wish I could get cable 🙂

What exactly do you mean by "right out in the sticks"? It's only a 3 mile drive for me right into the centre of Worcester. From the village exchange to the edge of Worcester suburbs is less than a mile - though I get far better internet speeds than them!

aracer, where are you, and where do you normally ride? I live just off the Ombersley road in North Worcester by the way, apparently for some reason we're connected to the Fernhill Heath exchange despite being closer to the town centre... Odd thing is despite my slow download speed, my upload speed seems more consistently fast that many people on much faster connections. Oh, and the comment about the quality of wire Vs quality of the exchance must be true... My DL speed never drops much below 2.5Meg, even at peak times... Must be crap wiring limiting the speed!

Just read Ian Munro's post about "work being a bit more nippy"... HOLY SHIT That's fast!

Here's mine...

Powick. I'm normally on the Malverns when I ride (though haven't been out for quite a while for a variety of reasons, apart from yesterday afternoon when I was out collecting controls from an orienteering event by bike!) Mostly ride at lunchtimes when I do, since I can "ride from the door" straight onto the hills.

Cool, drop me an email (it's in my profile) mate... I'm currently sat at home not doing very much (still unemployed, but hopefully for not too much longer) so always up for a ride... Not always easy trying to get any of my mates out cos they've either just got married, are about to, or just got lazy!

aracer, which village exchange are you referring to? If the Fernhill one, from its location I'd guess it is serving quite a big chunk of North Worcester and could be the same size as the main exchange.

Village local to me is 4 miles from the exchange. Half the village can get broadband...(probably 0.5mb max) the other half can't. Reason - two cables serve the village (via the same route) One cable is completely used by the lucky sods with bb, the other cable has higher losses and supplies the unlucky who have to make do with dial up. I have memories of sitting at the cab searching through the 200 pairs in the good cable in the hope of finding one without a dial tone. The only spares are faulty, and isn't viable to fix them as all the joints are along a twisty national limit road.

I did say up there, but if you missed it, Powick. Don't think it has any connections into Worcester, despite the edge of the burbs being nearer the exchange than many of those connected to it.

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WMPOW gives info - only 1352 houses as opposed to 14k for central Worcester exchange, 9k for St Johns which probably serves the nearest burbs and 9k for Fernhill Heath. http://www.samknows.com/broadband/mapping/mapping.php?ecode=WMPOW gives coverage map. In fact you can learn a lot in general there about what sort of BB service you should be able to get.

Oh, and according to that site, Maverickboy, you're likely nearer the FH exchange than the Worcester City one.

...and having seen that I should only get 5.5Mbps I thought I'd check again - my best yet! Can anybody beat 1.37Mbps more than you're supposed to get 8)

Not even sure whether to believe this one on an "up to 8Mbps" line!

£15 per month for up to 20Mbps. Drops to £10 if you have a Sky Talk product.

Speed is very server dependant. I have to connect to somewhere with a fibre optic link to get full speed. Traffic across the Atlantic is a little slow.

If only it was this good in the evenings - after 4pm my download speeds are about the same as I could get with a good modem, I've seen 45kbps...

Will be changing to something cheaper now that I've seen how much everyone else is paying.

Do I get a prize for having the slowest internet?

I only get 120 kbps download and average page load time is 17.96s!

I'm only 10 miles from Manchester, but somewhat off the beaten track..... I don't think they ever will remember to upgrade us!

Sky BB Unlimited but i'm fairly far from the exchange, and i get it free from work

it's all to do with distance from the exchange and the quality of internal phone wiring and whether or not you use extensions on your socket - can't really do anything about the distance from the exchange but AOL are shite

Oink, BT iplates will only make a difference if you have fitted internal extensions, otherwise a waste of money.
