[#1256275]

Right now i am getting about 530kbps download and 268 upload.I am on aol silver and the test here shows out of ten web pages.. the average time for each to open is 9.5 seconds.once midnight comes its worth having a surf of the net but at this hour? what a joke. The best i get is about 1.5mb and thats about the best for most providers in the area.

http://www.loadingtest.com/

I pay for upto 8mb speeds but i know that ive never got anywhere near that. I remember years ago getting about 5.most of the time i get around 1.3mb late in the eve or early morning.

anyone else on aol getting next to nowt?

This is about 3 miles from centre of Inverness.

Ive closed down aol and all aol gremlins running in the background (that i know of) and opened up IE. I now get between 0.8 & 1.1mb.

capital of the highlands.. still 20 years behind as with everything else.
aviemore has 5mb at lunchtime and thats a wee village up in the hills.

2.19s, 4280kbps, 365kbps.

The website loading appears to be a rubbish speed test though - highly dependent on what use you make of those sites (hence how much needs to be downloaded), and what you've looked at recently. What's more, that site seems not to have heard of Chrome!

is the usual standard test I'd rely on (I suppose it's a good sign that the other one gives very similar numbers, but when I tried it again I got much worse ones!)

...obvious what ISP I'm with from that, but also 3/4 of a mile from a relatively uncongested exchange - things that are normally far more important to the speeds you get than the ISP you're with. Comparing figures is only at all relevant with somebody else on the same exchange.

show off, adrian! (i just pictured myself in that indian slum with kevin macleod? as you look down yer nose from a skyscraper on its outskirts)

bleh.

djglover, its the time for renewal and they are offering the next 3 months for £10. then back to £19.99 a month.

I think new members get it for £14.99 but if you arent in a certain area, then all they can offer is the £19.99 deal.I think thats hows it stands right now.

"Offer ends 28/03/2010. Minimum 18 month contract. This offer is available to new customers or existing customers using AOL Anytime dial-up service. Credit card/debit details required. Subject to BT line and availability. This offer is only available in selected areas. If you can't get this offer, you may still be able to get AOL Broadband Wireless but you will be charged £9.99 for the first 3 months, then £19.99 thereafter.
"

Fastest speeds I get using ANY of the internet speed testing sites (which all seem about the same to me)...

DL: 2576kbps
UL: 658kbps

That's paying for a 20Meg serivce through Sky...

To be fair to Sky though, I got on the net to have a look what other people in my area are getting. It seems even though Worcester is a fairly sizable city, that it has a crap telecoms infrastructure compared to most other places. Unless you live right in the town centre (where you can get 5-6Meg DL if you're lucky) that to even get the 2.5Meg DL I get is amazing! Most people seem to be getting between 1 and 1.5Meg outside of the town centre!

Bit of a joke if you ask me...

3 years ago in a Village just outside of Coventry I was getting 6.5Meg DL speed, so why in a decent sized city is it so bloody poor?

Until the end of the week when I pay my bill, I'm with BT paying far too much a month.

Read what I wrote a bit further up. I'm not very far away from you, but in a small village with an exchange with a fraction of the connections compared to any of the Worcester city ones (and getting as much as 6Mbps). Worcester does seem to be notoriously bad - a survey in work last week suggested nobody was getting better than 3Mbps.

Average load time 2.21 seconds.
But that was to my computer here in Canada.
The CIA noticably slowed my downlaod of the BBC page when it went through a router in Langley, Virginia.

Poor speeds are probably down to ally cables that were used for a short period instead of copper when prices went silly. BB doesn't like it, they are bad enough for speech as they just corrode into white dust!

but also 3/4 of a mile from a relatively uncongested exchange - things that are normally far more important to the speeds you get than the ISP you're with.

In my experience, village exchanges (bearing in mind that normally only villages right out in the sticks will have their own exchange) are often the more congested due to lack of demand to justify investing in it. A bigger exchange is more likely to be upgraded before it nears full capacity as otherwise you get the situation where customers/ISPs are unable to apply for BB connections, and that's a bad thing in anyones book!

If your broadband speed varies and suffers during 'rush hour' then the exchange is the limiting factor, if your line is just slow all the time, its line quality.

I can beat that MArtyn - I'm on BT Broadband (Option 3) - and apparently I can get up to 8Mb - up until 3 weeks ago I wasn't getting 512Kb (in fact I was lucky to get 256Kb) downloads and about 412Kb uploads - I did have 1 week of 81Kb connection speed.

Anyway, I got a BT Iplate and this basically connects the home wiring direct to the BT master socket test connector (which apparently goes straight to the exchange) - I'm now getting just over 2Mb connection speeds - huge difference. Nothing else has changed.

If you are using traditional phone lines then your service will be using BT somewhere so the Iplate may help you as well - easiest way to check is to find the master socket in the house (the one where your phone line comes in from outside) - remove the front plate and see if you have a 'spare' phone socket visible - if so, plug you router and phone line into that and leave it for 15 minutes or so - then try it - should be much quicker but don't know by how much.

The Iplate can be bought from BT - BT Accelarator or something it is called - http://www.shop.bt.com/products/bt-iplate---bt-broadband-accelerator-58LT.html - check to make sure your master socket is compatible before you purchase it.

Good luck, I'm right on the very edge of the 5Km distance form the exchange - the exchange was one of the first built in the area so is very old and uses the old style cabling and non-digital solutions that the modern exchanges now use, so I suspect even getting the 2Mb is aserious achievement for me and my location - all the neighbours have similar problems so I know it isn't just my house.

has been better than this but bit crap over the last few days and internet dropping out all the time. (and router needing resetting..its all happening)

used to be on virgin (and blueyonder for years) with ace internet but they annoyed me so I went to slomo copper to cut my nose of (face spiting)

more 'HD' channels though

Mine is down a bit this am, guess the school kids are all on Facebook before school. Still our exchange is due to be upgraded to 24mb any time now but this will do for now.

With that iPlate thing, it can take up to five days for the exchange to detect the reduced noise/interference, and increase the speed. Its unlikely to be an instant speed increase.

Also, the latest sockets already have the iplate built in 🙂

Spooky, they say give it 24 hours to start noticing a difference but mine was instant i.e. as soon as I conencted the phone/router to socket and connected to the web...instant fix...it probably should take a bit of time but I found the time adjust was zero...
