We will be in touch
Just having my first test pint from the 40 pint barrel of Victorian Bitter and it's actually quite nice but it's really cloudy. Now aesthetics doesn't bother me but i don't want the squits!
Finings are your friend.
No, no, no, finings is bad.
Keep your brew vegan and the world smiles with you 😀
just get it down yer chippa 😀
OK thn - use a ****in gravel-related substitute for that vegan bloke you obviously share your homebrew with. 🙄
You're drinking homebrew and can still spell aesthetics.....Impressive 😀
Now yer talkin', TooTall. 😉
well i'm on pint number 3 now and it's funny, i don't care that it's cloudy. I'm really pleased with the taste and it's certainly doing it's job!
As for finings, isn't it too late to add those, (i'm not a vegan so i'm not bothered about animal extract or whatevers in it).
finings, Isninglass or eggshells.. the vegans pah, not many vegan ales are there ?
You'll need to let it settle a bit though
I tend to stick with vodka...
Mine are never clear until at least half way down the barrel 😆
funny you should say that, i've also 'made' some werthers original vodka, very nice it is too!
if it's cloudy it's not ready. You may get the squits, you may get away with it.
But the taste will improve if you leave it a couple more weeks.
Don't add any finings, as you'll need to let the gas out first. I did that once. The pressure barrel cap flew off & hit me in the eye. Blinded for (thankfully only) 12 hours, and a permanent distortion in that eye ever since
So if it's good already...

Then you have no vote when men are talking beer. Away with you.
Just a quick 'morning after' update.
Mostly good!
Stools slightly softer than normal but nothing like the squits however i did have a really bad headache but i suppose at 25p a pint i can afford a couple of packets of paracetamol!
i suppose it would be best to leave it a bit longer but it's for tonight's party so what the hell?
If its important to you , and you have some of those paper coffeee filters, then filter it through one of them. You need the deep cone ones that your granny used to have . If none available then you are pretty screwed. The Iso - electric attraction of Isinglass to yeast cells normally takes 12 -24 hours to clear beer in a cask.
I doubt you have access to Isingless at 1pm on New Years Eve , although any local brewery will have some , dilute it 1 + 3 then stir it carefully.
Your beer will get clearer daily, however as most people drink with their eyes first your friends will be more in awe if its clear. You can use gelatine , which you are more likely to get your hands on, however dose rates are an unkown as its not commomnly used in the trade.
It is also possible you have a protein haze , but unless you let the fermenation cool to below 3'C this is unlikely.

As the sediment is settling by gravity and you're sampling it from the bottom it is likely that it will suddenly clear a little way into the barrel. Bottles clear faster than barrels as it hasn't got so far to fall.
Serve it in pewter tankards, sorted!
swisstony: I'm intrigued, how do you make werther's vodka?
You bash up some Werthers and add vodka. Leave it for a while - drink it.
Rocket science it isn't.
Guess how you could make Mars vodka, or perhaps pear drop vodka? 😕
If it's from a kit then I doubt it's chill haze.
The rapid cooling after boiling that's needed to avoid this, is taken care of before everything's condensed and shoved in a can for you.
Or brew darker beers and keep the lighting low 😛
bassspine, as TooTall helpfully said! however i leave the bottle with the werthers in in the washing up bowl filled with hot water so that the sweets melt, a little more science for a much better result!
Try changing the environment of the barrel for a few days. It can speed things up a bit if you've kept it in a cold place.
If you want to put finings in then de pressurise the barrel first or you'll struggle to get the lid off and if you do you might be sorry :O)
