The wife’s computer won’t get past a blank desktop without doing the following to bring up the icons.
Ctrl+Alt+Del
Task manager
File
New Task (Run)
… and then the name of the necessary file is displayed.
However, last night I ran CCleaner on it and the file name is no longer prompted.
Any ideas what it is?

sounds like explorer.exe isn't running - can you start it from the task manager
if not do a system restore - you'll need to run rstui.exe
which is located in c:\Windows\System32\Restore\
Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
