My CRT finally went kaput over the weekend. I went out and bought a new plasma TV but feel like I've been "done". The TV has an ethernet port and the sales chap showed me the Panasonic Viera Cast services I could access on the Internet via the TV (You Tube, Skype, iPlayer, Picasa Web, Eurosport). This was a big selling point for me since where I live there is no Freeview and for reasons I won't go into here I can't get satellite.

Anyway, all plugged in and connected to my router OK, but then I discover there is no Viera Cast on this model. I genuinely believe the sales guy didn't deliberately "do one on me" but it leaves me with a problem. Having done a bit more research it seems TVs with these kind of services are going to cost me more money and I've already spent more than I intended. The TV is otherwise a good TV at a reasonable price (with a free Blue Ray player).

Should I just accept I can't get a TV with more than terrestrial channels without spending more money or waiting for Freeview OR should I kick up a fuss?

This internet thing on the TV is fairly new so its far from perfect and expensive. It'll be common and better in a year or too but that's probably too long to wait. You might be better off hooking your laptop up. You should be entitled to a full refund if you do want to take the tele back.

I would like to ditch our arse magnet (TV) but the devoted worshippers of the corner god in our house won't have it.

Is it possible to get all the main programmes on-line? I'm thinking of offering bribes of new laptops all round so I don't have to listen to another episode of EmmerOaks or Emergency Hospital With Dying Babies.

Could I then escape the TV/Radio tax?

Mis-sold IMO.

TX-P42S21B which is Comet's "own" TX-P42S20B. I may have a solution. The free Blue Ray player doesn't have Viera Cast but the next one up does. Maybe I can get them to swap to recompense me for their error.

As for Viera Cast, it has You Tube and PicasaWeb, both of which have our own vids and pics on, so it makes for a great way to show family and friends stuff without crowding around the PC. I believe iPlayer is coming too, and Eurosport is already there. Since I only have 4 channels at the mo' it is a tempting gimmick

I agree, but I'm confident it was accidentally mis-sold

If you wanted it refunding, it doesn't matter if it was mis-sold accidentally or intentionally. Goods legally have to be "as described", even if that's verbally by a salesdroid (though this is obviously not always easy to prove, it's your word against theirs).

So if you're asking "can I take it back" the answer is yes.

If you're asking "should I take it back," well, only you can answer that. The way I'd be looking at it is, am I that bothered? If I'd just dropped several hundred quid on a new TV I'd want to look at it and be really happy, not look at it and think "cock, I should've taken it back 18 months ago." If it's going to bug you every time you switch it on, I'd fire it back.

I think the reality is that to get what I thought I was getting I have to spend more money, when to be quite frank I'd already gone over budget with the thing anyway. This is one of my failings. I have a budget in mind way before doing the research, so I think I can get the telly I want for a price that is way under what I need to pay. Same with bikes, cars, anything! 😆

I know I'll be disappointed by not having all these extra internet bits I thought I was getting, but otherwise the TV is a good TV at a good price. The Blue Ray upgrade looks like the cheapest/easiest solution to get me those internet goodies and I hope I can get the upgrade for nowt. Wish me luck 🙂

Take it back. You only have this option open to you for a few days, so get your money back and think on things for a week or two. If you decide you'll have the TV anyway, go and buy it back.

Something similar happened to me in Currys last week, and after a week I went and bought a Sony Bravia EX403 instead.

the TV is a good TV at a good price.

You can stop worrying, then. (-:

A large proportion of the current crop of BD players come with 'network' enhancements now; I was eyeing up the Sony S370 before my bathroom collapsed and I developed a sharp stabbing pain in the wallet. Amongst other things, it supports iPlayer. The LGs are also very good (but no iPlayer and no multiregion DVD options, hence me going for the Sony.)

not sure the wife and I can last all that time without a telly 😯

I've actually limited my options quite a lot. I have two small children who are used to a CRT with a screen that they can drive their cars over, poke etc. LCDs and LEDs are out 'cos they're too delicate, whilst I "re-educate" the kids not to touch. The Plasmas - and particularly the Panasonic one I bought - are more "impact proof".

If this Blue Ray upgrade doesn't give me what I want I think I will have to take it back and start again

Take the Bluray player back see if they'll swap it for the wonderful peice of kit known as a PS3. Full internet access, Bluray, Wifi, Loads of films to rent, iPlayer AND you can play games on it too!!

Legal: you're entitled to your money back. You relied on the representation that the TV had Viera Cast; it does not, so you get to rescind (unwind) the contract.

IPTV: it's coming, though will inevitably take longer than expected. Project Canvas (the joint venture between BBC, ITV, Ch4, BT, TalkTalk, and Arkiva) to set a standard for IPTV delivery is due to be live from April next year. BT is already running BT Vision, TalkTalk will have their version out some time I should think.

Other content providers will continue to find ways of getting live, on demand and catch up content to consumers in as many ways as possible. It's possible to watch iPlayer and YouTube (where Ch4 has its own channel) via the Nintendo Wii, so it's inevitable that others will follow.

that was the long term plan but that's another £250 to find! Although I have heard that the Blue Ray player on the PS3 is not as good as standalone players. Neither here nor there since I have no Blue Ray disks yet 😆

I wouldn't swap my PS3 for anything. Especially one of these Dirty Nasty Xbox's. Although I've been offered a chipped 360 cheap that doesn't go online which is tempting 🙂

The PS3 blu-ray player is very good as a blu-ray player. Or it was widely described as such when I got mine a couple of years ago.

Only down-sides are the size, and there's a fan - which is typically very quiet, but there.

the new "slim" ones are very small and, apparently, quieter. I think Blue Ray players have improved since the PS3 tho'

Anyone had any joy using a PS3 as a HDD recorder?

I used Play TV, it was pretty good and given that you already have a PS3 if you are looking at Play TV, it was good value. Worked well although I chewed through the remainder of my 40gb with just a few programmes. Not HD either.

Will swap for some 2009/2010 Rockshox SIDs 100mm

😉

Do they not make them any more? I think I might want to keep it tbh unless you really really really need it for some pressing reason.

Well I paid £50 for a used one.

You missed the chance there to make up a persuasive cock and bull story to pull my heart strings as to why you needed it.. 🙂

that would misleading and bad of me as a salesperson. And would put me in the same catagory as the op's Tv salesman now wouldn't it? 😉

Happy ending. I kept the TV but the shop swapped the BD player for one with internet content (the Sony recommended by Cougar. Cheers). Happy as larry now. I have iPlayer, YouTube, 5 On Demand and all sorts of other stuff I've not checked out yet, in a slick interface that will no doubt see by download limits exceeded within the week 😆

For those wanting to get into Internet TV services, learn from my experience. Get a Sony. Ace! Samsung and Panasonic are playing catch up. 😀

Mr CRT is starting to wave a little white flag, the picture has been getting progressively worse over the last 2 months.
Been looking at the Samsung LED 6 series with all the fancy internet gubbins but I'm wondering if I should save money and get a 5 series and just use virgin cable for the extra bits....will that work?

Without going into the reasons why I can't get Freesat or Freeview which is why Internet TV appealed so much. There's two main ways to get it: through a TV or via a Blu Ray player (which of course includes the PS3). The market is all over the place at the moment, with unreliable info about which brands support which internet services. For example Samsung internet-capable TVs (apparently) do have iPlayer but I can tell you from experience the Blu Rays don't (nor LoveFilm). Try before you buy or make sure you can take it back without fuss if it doesn't give you what you need.

Sony has both these in a much better user interface on their Blu Ray players and the BDP-S370 model can be had for as little as £120 at the moment. You will need either a wireless dongle for it (extra £) or wire it direct to your router. I've used those powerline network adapters that just plug into the mains.

I had no interest in Blu Ray a week ago, but being forced to but a new TV I've learnt a lot - the hard way - in a short space of time. A relatively inexpensive Blu Ray player hooked up to your TV and internet can give you LOADS even if you don't use the Blu Ray bit. Just make sure it's a Sony 😉
