I need a printer and i have no idea what to get. It will be used for colour photos and general family printing, moderate use as kids in school now and its "essential".

i'm thinking £200 tops(is that enough?) and going down the inkjet route.

Appreciate ink is where the real cost is and would look for a cheap online supplier.

Can anyone recommend one, printer that is?

Kodak range is very good and cheap refills too. £200 is more than enough you could go sub £100.

Try a Canon Pixma 4850, I've got one and it's great for photos and general stuff:

Currently under £60 and you can keep the rest of your budget for ink! (I'd recommend sticking with the Canon refills as I've done for two printers by using 3rd party ink - although other people might have had better luck!).

ps. you don't need to buy the 'grey ink tank' as some of the reviews on Amazon suggest, not sure where that came from...

You can't go wrong with those canons, I have an ip4700 and its great.

Agree with the comment about the ink though, for complete hassle free use just gets the original cartridges.

Hmm! I was a big Canon fan then I had 2 fail both just out the years warranty. Which is when I switched to Kodak, Canon was a good printer but failing after a year is rubbish. My Kodak is over 2 year old now and still going strong.

And yes stick to original cartridges some things aren't worth going cheap for.

Look at cartridge prices first, then cartridge style.
I bought a Canon 3600 which is fine and has 4 seperate cartridges which you can buy individually. 3 colours in one cartridge is not worth the money imo.
Quality was fine and without very close scrutiny it was difficult to tell the difference between printer or chemically processed.

+1 cartridge prices

tbh I buy a new printer every couple of years as the cartridges become obsolete - consequently don't spend too much.

£50-70 should get you a good colour printer/scanner/copier.

Kodak went for a cheap cartridge approach a few years ago, not sure of the market now.
