Colleague just walked in complaining about how cold it is and just went into a rant about what a shit summer it has been.

I think it has been ok, pretty dry and some nice sunshine.

What do you lot think?

Here in the South East the weather has been fine overall. Compared to what the summers were like five years back, it's positively tropical.

Dry but even windier than usual and a little cool and overcast compared to the past few years here in the Fens.

Crap, especially as I was ill during the mini heat wave we had ages ago.

Fine in SW France and Northern Spain. A bit hot at time, a bit damp at times. Excellent.

it's been okay, not too hot, not too cool but a bit wet at times - especially for Castle Coch which a swamp most of the time anyway.

Warm but not that sunny, with some annoyingly unpredicatbale periods of rain - about par for the course then 😉

Quite breezy / showery / cloudy... but definately not as hot as the last few summers. We havent had a stable azores high pressure settle over us to stabilise the weather

Wet, and cool. Although I've been in Zambia and France so those bits were warm/hot and dry.

Not made better by returning to work today with the sun streaming through the windows, although it was a chilly dog walk this morning.

I think it's been pretty good so far. Can't say I've noticed anything too odd where I've been, even the odd torrential downpour here and there's been welcomed by me.

I expect It will be pretty good for some time to come. September and October tend to be excellent months down on the coast...

Where I am in Perthshire it rained every day in July and about 10 out of 16 days in august so far. It's not been a good summer...

Not spectacular - quite a bit windier than normal. And it rained during the five days set aside for my biking trip, which makes it officially shite.

yeah, pretty good I think, there's been some showery days, but that's nothing unusual. Sun's out now 8)

Definitely cooler and no prolonged hot spell here in N. Wales. Still, dry though. Ideal riding weather!

worst summer in Glasgow area I can remember, very few dry days. Ironically it's lovely today as my kids go back to school !

I think it's been ok around the Tay estuary and north east Fife.
I judge the [s]year[/s] summer by how many proper soakings I have had on the commute (less than 6) .
However, the weekends have been a bit rubbish and that's what people remember.

Not warm but generally sunny and dry. So long as it's 20C+ and not raining I'm happy. The trails around here that never dry out got the closest I've seen for a few years until the rain hit a couple of weeks ago.

Location - the micro-climate of West Berkshire.

Really dry on the whole.
Last night it felt very autumnal.

Good

Could've done with being a lot hotter (that day in July was pretty much perfect) but otherwise not too shabby

I'm in West Berks too, I've not had so many BBQs in living memory as I have this year. It's been bloody marvellous !

Worst summer in decades, and even since records began in parts of Scotland here. (well, rainfall that is). The garden is crap, things aren't even beginning to ripen that should be on the table by now.

My work (gardening) has been horiffic, some gardens have honestly not had one dry visit this year (boggy lawns, mower tyre marks etc etc).

I spend half the week in London (working) and the remainder in the North West. Apart from the fact the South East is always warmer and sunnier (NW is usually more cloudy) on the whole I think it's been OK.

Interesting the observations on it being windy this year - I live in West Lancashire, which is flat and breezy even in a still day. But there have been some days when it's been surprisingly blowy.

My MIL thinks the weather has been awful this year but she's eternally dissatisfied with everything.

I agree with CaptSasquath - we're not done yet !

I wonder why people expect a 2003 or 1996 style heatwave, this summer feels like a 'normal' summer for this country, some hot, the odd cooler day but shorts and Tshirt for most of it

It's been an average summer. It's the coming winter I'm more concerned about...

In the West Mids and have spent several weeks in North Wales - I reckon it's been pretty good, have had a lot of dry sunny weather. I get that it's been a bit rubbish in some places, but also reckon some people have unrealistic expectations and remember extended heat waves which haven't ever happened.

Been pretty good IMO, few cold days but on the whole pretty decent. I do live in Wales though, and it doesn't rain in Wales.

As mentioned above Scotland really has been poor this year (or should it by pouring 😥 ). It doesn't feel quite as bad as 2 years ago, but compared to other years its been cack.

a bit wet at times - especially for Castle Coch which a swamp most of the time anyway.

I remember 20 years ago riding Castle Coch all summer on some amazing dry trails, the type that end up with you covered in a fine layer of red dust. 😀

No, it's been wet, grey and the wind is still cold

I usually manage to escape to somewhere with a sky that you can see, but been feeling too crappy to travel this year

I'm not liking this getting dark before 9pm business either 😕

It's been very mixed round here (W. Yorks, edge of the Dark Peak). The good days have been great, and I've enjoyed some lovely sunny rides, but it has been wetter and windier than usual, I think. There seems to be more ground water around than last year which would bear that out.

Yes, been great. I can't remember the last time i had to hose my bike off after a ride, just wipe the dust from stanchions & clean drive chain. Any rain has just been soaked up so far, leaving trails dry, for now. 😀

Reading all the responses, is it the case that the weather has been more varied across the UK than normal - in that some parts have consistently been a lot better than others? Is it normal for weather to be more consistent across the country?

It must have been cooler than usual here in the NE as the local charmers have, by and large, kept their shirts on.

dry and windy, cooler than the last couple of years but nothing to complain about. Many of the trails by me are complete dustbowls, some of the descents are getting super sketchy - no bike cleaning though! 🙂

Chilly but dry most of the summer here near Derby. I have tanlines, and bikes aren't that dirty, more dusty, but I don't remember many warm sunny rides.

Here in Glos it's been pretty good by my reckoning. I cycled to work most days from May to July (I don't ride in if it's due to rain) and have only had the last 3 weeks off riding because of doing my back in. Admittedly that's been pretty much the only riding I've done this year as we've been busy with other stuff but I can't imagine ff road has been anything but mostly dry and fast for months.

Very dry but not notably hot here in southern Hampshire. Good riding weather, mediocre beach weather. Most years I'll have ridden the 40 mile round trip to Milford on Sea for a swim several times by now but this year I'm still waiting for some proper warm weather to coincide with my days off.

Glad you asked this, my mate has been whinging about how bad the summer's been too.
My view is that it's been pretty dry, some good sun but cooler and windier than usual; so a mediocre one for Sussex.

Judging by how green our lawn is, I'd say it's been wetter than average (Cambridge).

We've had six weeks of sunny and hot weather. It hasn't dipped below 30 degrees plus three weeks in Italy before that means today is the first time I've seen prolonged rain in about ten weeks. My garden looks burnt! The joys of living in mainland Europe.

Its not been as nice as last year, but nowhere near as grim as the one before (where we had so much rain the trails never dried out)

More than anything, its just been dull. Not cold, or wet, nothing dramatic, just overcast and grey

I was at a farm near Perth this AM finishing off a big boiler install on a grain/chip dryer and the farm manager was bemoaning the fact that this is the first spell of decent weather he's had but the crops are so far behind (2 1/2 weeks) that his combine is sitting idle with nothing to cut.

July average rainfall: 47mm this year 167mm.

no, not a good summer.

When autumn comes I'm greeted by spiders webs across my face as I go to get my bike out of the shed.
I had a spiders web this morning.
Far too early for that sort of thing.

Here in East Anglia I've experienced a prolonged spring, rather than what I'd call a summer. It didn't properly warm up until end of June and then alternate days were dry sun or cooler with cloud.

It has been dry though.

And as mentioned earlier, it's been a windy one, I've not shaken the reef out all season so far and I've been spending lots of time on the Broads and rivers.

It's been feeling distinctly autumnal too over the past few days.

2/10, must try harder or I'll be writing a very stern letter.
