I bought an old used vintage guitar switch from the USA via Ebay for £39.70 plus £8.46 postage.

Now I have a card through my door from the Royal Mail stating that there's a customs charge for £13.93!!

Is this excessive or expected? If excessive who do I raise it with?

Thanks

I guess it's not expected or you wouldn't be complaining about it.

Glen More "to be expected" - doh! LOL

uplink - it doesn't say but I shan't be buying anything from outside the EU for a while if it's correct!

Did someone say protectionism?

Duty varies according to the types of good involved. I'm recall a good guide on the HMRC website about it.

Less than i would have expected, they often charge a £25 handling fee.

It is one of the risks of buying anything overseas (and the same for a Yank buying from here) - there will be a PO charge (in there, and maybe more when you go pay it), as they have to then send the cash to Customs.

Got caught a few years ago on something my son ordered, so I now avoid the US.
