Its a ploy to make you look at the adverts more.
In good old world, all the interesting stuff was on the left so you could ignore the adds. Now to login, view post etc you have to scroll to the right...annoying I know (no seriously it is annoying)
There was some warnings about IE6 compatibility a few months back. Do a search to see what it was about?

I know IE6 is dead, but there a 30,000+ where I work with a global IT policy. Change takes time.
