Yes - but in theory the above tab means don't play any strings whilst muting A,D,G & B......

So rather a quiet piece of tab.....

My understanding is strike the strings whilst muting to give a percussive sound or 'ghost' notes

Had a listen, it is a 'ghost' strum. In this instance it is played by applying the edge of the palm of your strumming hand to the strings as you strum (further in than a palm mute) to give a percussive effect.

having listened do you think those initial strums go, down up down up?

or down, down, up down?

I would go down up down up. No matter what I'm strumming I usually maintain a steady down up pattern in either an 8th note or 16 note pattern, striking the strings when required or passing over if not. This helps me maintain a steady rhythm.
