We will be in touch
My lad has decided that he wants to learn how to play the guitar and would like one for his birthday.
I know absolutely nowt about them so could do with a few pointers on where to look and what to look for!
Cheers
Steve
What type of guitar is he looking to play? Electric, accoustic or classical?
For tips pointers and lessons I would highly recommend justinguitar.com. Once you know what kind of guitar he wants try and take someone who has some experience playing to a guitar shop to help you pick one out. This proved very valuable to me when I first started out.
Do try to buy from a shop rather than online.
Hope this helps a little.
Accoustic.
A baby Taylor is a fantastic 3/4 size guitar but at 9 it still might be a bit big ! I don't know about smaller ones.
Head across to Kenny's Good shop and were very helpful to my son when he was just getting started.
If he wants an electric, don't get him an acoustic - he'll hate you and never use it.
The little mini Strat's by Squier are lovely things.

A cheap small electric, the smallest amp you can find (they're all loud!) and then a cheap multi-FX and he'll be in 7th heaven making silly noises.
With younger players, the setup is very important as they don't have the strength to overcome a high action. Personally, I'd go for something secondhand, that's been properly setup. Secondhand guitars are generally good buys and can be moved on without loosing much money if he doesn't take to it. The Fretboard, Gumtree and Guitar Mart are good places to look.
What's the budget? You don't have to go expensive ....yet.
There are lots to choose from i the sub £100 bracket.
I learned on a full-size guitare at nine. I bought my son a 3/4 acoustic and he hardly ever touched it but a few years later he picked up my old Sigma Martin acoustic (which has a neck narrower than the 3/4) and now plays everything from Brad Paisley to Jimmy Page. I'll second the suggestion of Squire but a full-size Telecaster.
Edit: take the e-string off like Keef if his hands a too small initially.
Squier Vintage Modified Mustang! Short scale neck as cool as XXXX
