I'm looking for a simple cheap gps watch that will beep at preset distances, or every mile or km, to encourage ....

Garmin 310 does this. Cheap ish.

Yes, Garmin 310 does this and is a damned good GPS watch thing for training. However, the Forerunner 110 may also do that and is currently about 110 on Amazon with a decent HRM.
