If you get the chance, go and see the orchestral performance of Timeless with the Heritage Orchestra.

They've performed a small number of sets in the last 2 years in Bristol and London, all with Mr Gold Teeth "conducting" and the performance really is tremendous, The drummers in particular are easily on a par with the performances in the film "Whiplash" - especially a bearded percussionist that looks like he just stepped off a viking longship. It's probably the first and last time that drums are at the front of the stage and centrepiece to a whole performance.

If you like Timeless, there's plenty of old school stuff from Good Looking Records on the web - look up LTJ Bukem to get started.

Adam F - Colours

Often forgot compared to Goldie's Timeless album, but arguably even better.

LTJ Bukem - Logical Progressions

WAY too long since I last listened to this, need to dig it out!

Forgot to say - for any old school Goldie / Bukem / Adam F aficionados, there's a great free podcast on iTunes from Hospital Records with an hour or so of great new (and very diverse) music every 1-2 weeks.

They've got a pretty big stable of artists now but some of my favourites are:

More Atmospheric:

Netsky -

Etherwood -

Nu Tone - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWvHHN3gBeI

And a bit more mainstream

London Electricity - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbXJ1PaRrQQ

High Contrast - this set was incredible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZHbBK8Za2k

And plenty more here - all on spotify:

Goldie was on Radio 6 yesterday I think, on that pillock Gilles Peterson's show, worth a listen!

From a production point of view I think Noisia - The Tide is as good as it gets for me.

Whilst we're at it, Dom from Dom & Roland is a mountain biker (Roland doesn't seem to be as keen 😉 ). There is also a user on here called mickyfinn, who does contribute to audio threads, not sure if it is the Micky Finn or not.

The technology behind the music at this time was evolving really rapidly. Particularly on the T Power Album, you can really feel that this guy had a massively creative approach to building a song compared to older tracks.

Also, putting my hi-fi hat on, the production levels in some of this music are fantastic. I feel a bit guilty for posting you tube links!

And to move full circle, here's an Underworld remix of Rob and Goldie - Shadow, for their 100th release on the Moving Shadow Label. It has a LONG build up, but the drop is worth it and then some!

A bit old now but Shy FX's Diary of a Digital Soundboy still sounds good.

Most tunes by High Contrast are worth a listen.

I recently bought Static - Something about nothing, also worth a listen.

Benny Page

A couple of nice mixes here that I still listen to regularly:

On a bit of a darker tip, Ed Rush & Opticals Wormholes and Matrix's Sleepwalk. Sleepwalk is just amazing. Will bookmark to go through some of the others.

Another shout for Bukem and Photek, and I'll take this opportunity to drop one of my brother's old tunes.

Commix are another fave of mine, really nice production, spanning quite a range of dnb styles from liquid to jump up to dark brooding stuff.

The trouble with this is it's almost impossible to choose one tune to sell a producer. As soon as you find one you listen to another...

I think the best way to listen to drum and bass is to listen to a good mix. There is a bit of a saturation of mixes these days and I'm never sure where to find good ones any more. There used to be a crazy dnb forum called Dogs on Acid that was a good source, but it died.

Noice, wish I'd made more of an effort with my tunes years ago, I made it to the dizzy heights of a couple of DOA mixes I think!

I had the privilege of doing an edit with Rob Playford in the movin shadow studios, it's was on a Flytronix tune that we were trying to get on radio so needed to 3mins approx in length (it didn't work so was binned) did same thing with Shy FX as well & some Ram stuff for Andy C. BTW I used to be a radio plugger so a lot of those guys would bring me tunes they had to see if they could crossover onto R1. Did work for Peshay Photek J Majik Pendulum DJ Fresh Marky Adam F Etc in fact probably not many from that era I didn't work it. Never worked with Goldie though but did Kemi & Storm

Andy C - Nightlife series

Bryan G does a monthly V Recordings podcast.

DJ Hype does a weekly show on Kiss FM which is available on catch up every week.

They're 3 of the scenes biggest DJs.

Been into jungle & drum and bass since the very beginning and its still pretty much all I listen to. Off to see Andy C do his All Night event next week. At 42 I'll be twice as old as most of the rest if the crowd. Once a junglist always a junglist

Still prefer live stuff to albums and studio stuff as it needs the MCs. Check out EAX Sound on Mixcloud. He has hundreds of live DJ sets from events old and new.

Micky Finn always been my favourite dj. Along with Randall and Brockie. Bassman favourite MC. Here's a clip of Bassman and Randall, boy am I excited about next week!!!

Same age as me.

My 14 year old asked me the other day (when in the car listening to Benny Page) 'why do you listen to youth music'. I had to explain to him that hiphop, dnb and even dubstep (well almost) was around before he was born.

My favourite studio produced DJ Hype mix album from back in the day.

Used to get some excellent D&B nights up in Birmingham when I was at uni in the late 90s.

As it happens, I was having a d'n'b retro listening session yesterday, listening to LTJ Bukem stuff on spotify. I quite like lamb (in the context of this thread, the band). Not strictly d'n'b but quite drummy. As a DJ, I enjoy Marcus Intalex.

Kosheen are also worth a listen. Like Lamb - not strictly D&B but should appeal to those that like their D&B less hard and fast.

Start with the first album - Resist.

Just spotted this comment - what's wrong with GP FFS?

At least he knows his music, unlike the follow Craig Charles who reads all his 'music history' from text someone else has prepared - I am betting as he sometimes commits some shocking mispronunciations of stuff that is well known in his supposed area of expertise.

I've been listening to this repeatedly over the last few days. I like this sound (not sure about the "minimal" tag) as I'm getting a bit older.
