Why are most of the staff utterly miserable?

They offer repaired tents for sale.

Ripped groundsheet repaired.

Can I ask for more detail? No. Can I just see the groundsheet then? No its company policy, we dont have time.

I dont want you to errect the tent idiot, just pull out the groundsheet.

TWO stores were miserable. None of the staff helpful. All looked trapped and depressed.

Firsts and last visit. Never again.

Never had a problem with them myself.

Often groundsheets are built in.

We've had them set up tents including screwing into the floor to "peg" it out, so you must have had a bad day.

Always had great service in Bristol

Could there be another source of miserable that is common to both of the stores you have visited and isn't the staff? 😉

Second store: "repaired tear in roof"

Where is it porch? How long? repair as stated. Buy it if you dont like bring it back.

20kgs and two car trips just because you wont show me?

JY no one makes them work there. Their employer doesnt say 'act how you want to the punters if you like' and customer services skills should be a core requirement...

Maybe they'd spoken to the people at your LBS. There's probably pictures up of you behind the counter in every local outdoor shop, like a sort of Pubwatch scheme.

I think you get 10% less miserableness if you buy one of their crap membership cards though.

Mmmm - well I could **** about pulling tents out of bags to show this cheapskate the size of the repair, or I could just stand around chatting to my mates.

Difficult one that.

We're looking for a motivational speaker in the next couple of weeks, any chance that you'll be available?

There are a couple in the Bristol store who are a bit young and, em, 'inexperienced'.

I went in there on 20% off tents day. It took the poor lad 4 attempts to ring it through the till correctly.

You work in recruitment dont you?
Do you think you get what you pay for in terms of staff wages or is the wage irrelevant to the skill and motivation of the staff?

Its not surprising lowly paid staff dont give a shit now is it?

I'm with Hora on this. If your job is to sell stuff then you should bloody well sell it.

This applies anywhere. Shops, online, eBay, STW classifides. If you're selling you need to work at it. If someone asks a question you answer it or find the answer. If something goes wrong, you fix it.

not being paid what you want to be paid is no reason to not do your job properly.
anyway, people on minimum wage have never had it so good.

I'd rather they were shoddy sales people than following you round the store trying to bump up their commission.

They should pay them in ripped tents. That'd teach them.

Great team at my local store. They've even put me off buying stuff in the past because they know it will be cheaper in a couple of weeks or so 🙂

Buy it if you dont like bring it back.

You need to think smarter to make your life easier.

I had the same conversation at the York shop last summer when I bought our tent.

Took it to the till, Paid for it, and then took it to the space where they erect the tents for display, unzipped the bag and checked it.

Turned out it was fine, and was a good repair. So I zipped it all back up and took it home.

(if I hadn't liked it, I only had a 30 second walk back to the till for a refund)

How I cringed as I watched the guy in front of me in the queue attempt to get an exchange (not even a refund) on a leaking water bottle...it took 3 staff members and 5 minutes to utter the imortal words "we've never had any other problems" before begrudgingly agree to an exchange....put me off buying a tent there.

(Manchester Ancoats store 3 or 4 months ago)

Im talking about Ancoats as well. One bloke said.......

We dont have the space to open the tent up here...

Their tent area has a huge area/free space next to the front glass/facia area.

What amazes me is I always stay polite. My mum taught me to be polite to customer service/staff etc...

although I want to shout sorry are you busy? Is this job in the way of your social life, a inconvenience?

Why not just buy an intact tent? Then you can put the rips anywhere you want.

Signs that the staff are totally ****ed off #73 'yeah I'd leave that a week mate. It's been like shifting herpes that one. He'll be discounting the crap out of it in a fortnight....'

not being paid what you want to be paid is no reason to not do your job properly.

Pretty sure it is and it is a reason to not care as you can get an equally crap job that bare you the bare inimum they have to...would you like fire with that?

anyway, people on minimum wage have never had it so good.

Obvious troll is obvious

I guess its folk who are resentful and think they are owed a living.

Surely you save that sort of bile for dole scrounging immigrants rather than working folk 🙄

Anyway I missed your insights , from a recruitment perspective, about whether more money gets you better candidates with greater skills?
Care to answer the bleeding obvious?

Sounds like a perfect place to open the tent you have just bought to check it before deciding wether to take it home or return it then eh ?

Or even to open the tent before you buy it, assistant or no assistant. I'd have no qualms about hoiking out a repaired tent to check on the quality of the repair.

I always like the way that they have someone on the door to say 'hello' to you as you walk in. Nice to watch as you're waiting in a ginormous queue to pay.

I phone Go Outdoors quite a lot, to check whether they still have (or have enough of) the often totally random thing I'm about to drive 15 miles for (their stock levels update once a day and don't tell you how many they have).

I speak to the Clydebank and Coatbridge stores and it must get annoying when someone calls and asks you to go and count how many Black Diamond Oval wiregates are hanging on the rail at the other side of the store(especially when you probably have no idea what one even looks like).

All of them have been pretty helpful to be honest 🙂

Don't get me wrong, i'd never go in looking for advice, but they can't afford to employ hundreds of "experts" at the prices they offer their products.

People often say "support your local store", well if my local store didn't sell stuff at 30% more than GoOutdoors (or other online vendors), I might just do that, but I'm not rich enough to piss away money on stuff where I know exactly what I want just to support a shop I have no more connection with than GoOutdoors.

I would pay good money to watch Hora in a public-facing customer service role, in a retail environment, for a day. On minimum wage. In Poundland. 3 days before Christmas 😀

I worked in Woolies for 3yrs on circa £2.50 an hour on the music/VHS etc dept. I didn't think twice to go the 1/2 mile down to the basement to look for more stock for a customer or show/find something for a customer.

So its doubley annoying when you hear 'everything we have is on display'.. true with some stores with small stock rooms but not every bloody one!

They're all utterly delightful at the Harlow shop. Really much more cheerful and helpful than most shop staff.

Is it just a Mancunian thing Hora?

Maybe they've been pre-warned about a propensity for warranty claims. From every bike shop in the UK

Before long every retailer in the UK will have a picture of you, next to the ones of shoplifters, saying DO NOT SELL ANYTHING TO THIS MAN. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! YOU'LL NEVER HEAR THE LAST OF IT!

And at least we're now a bit wiser as to why Woolies went bust

😆

Not sure- I've had sterling service from Richer Sounds but then Richer sounds staff wherever I've been seem to be into what they are selling which helps enormously. The staff can't be on fantastic money can they?
