ok i currently have an older mac. i use time machine to back it up onto an external hard-drive,

am i right in thinking that when i open the box of my new computer i can upload all my old settings, pics etc from the external hardrive straight onto my new computer?

cheers, Rob

Or can't you connect them together with firewire and use one as a donor and one as a receiver. That works well.

I'd recommend carbon copy cloner which will allow you to backup your existing mac onto an external hard drive. You can then use the migration assistant to copy your data.

Or you should be able to press t on boot to start your old mac in target disk mode. Then you can attach it to the new mac using a firewire cable and it should appear as a firewire disk.

watch the time machine tutorial on the apple website. One spec addresses this question.

I did the Time Machine to port the stuff from my Ti-Book onto my new superbling Unibody and it was totally seamless.
