I'm rebuilding an old motorbike & left the engine with a reputable place for it to be rebuilt, long & the short of it that I've not been able to get an answer on the phone for a while & now the number is no longer obtainable. Paid them a deposit for parts on credit card back in February so that should be safe & checked with a local if he knows anything but no response as yet...
I'll be in the area next week but if they are shut up is a letter claiming engine no blah blah blah shoved through the door going to do any good & are there any templates for such a letter available on line?
If they've gone bust then unfortunately it's really difficult.

Register an interest with the administrator and hope.
As an unsecured creditor you won't be a high priority, sorry 😔

He's not an unsecured creditor though, he's the owner of the engine. (Well his deposit for the parts makes him one, but not the engine) That is not a business asset which the administrators/liquidators/whoever can sell, it's the OP"s property which the business was working on. Tracking iit down may be tricky, though especially iif the liquidators didn't know it wasn't company property and have already sold it ..

In which case you've not got much hope of finding someone official unless a partnership winding up order or bankruptcy orders against the individuals have been made but that can take months.
Quite possible that it's just closed with no formal process. A death, a sudden illness, or a landlord owed rent could be all it took.

Unfortunately not, I don't think just a first name will help... It's quite possibly one of the other reasons you state or even that they've forgotten to pay their phone bill. I'll put a letter together just in case & pop down there next week to find out what's going on.
Turn up, with a friend and possibly some bolt cutters in the back of the car.
If the premises are 'not properly secured' you might be able to go in and take your engine back. Make sure you only take your engine and the parts associated with it though.
Might be worth videoing yourself explaining that you are there to collect the engine and showing the 'unsecured entry' point before entering.
Not totally sure where that leaves you legally, but it should get your engine back. It isn't that much different to the Police forcing entry because they thought they heard someone inside en empty building crying for help, and they have been doing that for years.
