Friday is beer day, tunes day and food day. Been studying since 4AM - exams fortnight ugh.

Eat
Meeting my lady-friend at a wee place called the Fat Pony I read about in the Guardian dahling. Supposedly good and cheap.

Listen
Study day = much music streaming. Listened to the back catalogue of Horisont, some Scandanavian 70s style band. Very tuneful and upbeat to get me through the books.

Drink
Got a couple of sweet German tankards for a quid each at the charity shop, cleaned my beer lines and tapped two new kegs.

First up, an attempt at a Black Forest Gateaux beer. Tastes nothing like cherries, but is an excellent roasty porter @ 4.5%

Second, double dry hopped/biotransformed double IPA @ 8.5%
Oh my lord it's good.

19 litres of each will see me through to 8.30pm atfor Hellraiser on 35mm film at the Filmhouse.

Went for a lot of oats to give a slick mouthfeel. Surprising head retention, considering. Rice hulls were added as worried about a stuck sparge with all the oats.
Hops were chosen for complimentary fruit flavours (admittedly hopping is pretty light).
Tried to keep ABV as low as possible. Quite difficult with the syrup etc. Tried for 4% but that just wasn't happening.
I didn't have as much drinking chocolate in the cupboard as I thought.
The syrup (a whole bottle - which tasted amazing) just did not carry through.

T’is fish pie.. made it this afternoon... two helpings and I’m bloated.
Whisky, three snifters and I’m very warm and cosy.
I’m now at the stage where Jimmy (bless him) is halfway through his Dazed and Confused solo endeavour and I’m glad it’s ending to be honest.. BITD I would have wet my pants over it, but now.. it’s all a bit of a racket TBH.. but next up is....

Might give that porter a try, did a cherry heffeweizen last year and it was ace, added the fruit in the secondary though (and it was a lot, 75g/l iirc).

Yeah, adding the fruit at that stage would be better in retrospect. However, I had this bottle of syrup - so sugary I wasn't sure how it would react added late in the game - whether or not the yeasties could get all the sugar out of it or not. The issue with fruit beer is that fruit is expensive!
However, we did plant 400 fruit trees at our bike park, so once they get ready I might make a Skelf Bike Park fruit beer with what grows there.

I was looking at making a gooseberry gose or Berlinner Weisse or something like that. Was looking online for gooseberry syrups - only thing I could find was a 25 litre barrel at about 200 plato or something! Maybe a bit overkill.

If anyone is wondering, The Fat Pony on Bread Street in Edinburgh is great. Small/medium sized (capacity about 30 or so), nice modern bistro style atmosphere, lots of small plates on menu that were lovely, reasonably priced and relaxing atmosphere (especially for that area of town)

15 years old from Woolworths, those things. Always the way, the cheap stuff lasts and the posh stuff we replaced them with started getting broken so now only gets used for 'occasions' 🙂
