No recording necessary.
Small would be good.
Might buy a "Smart" TV so I don't think I need anything clever in the decoder.

Manhattan HD-S2 has been mentioned but anything else I should consider?

TIA

I just bought the manhattan, 47 at currys. My old one was ok but the remote broke and it was cheaper to replace the whole unit. Havent tried it yet but it looks small.

Humax HD1000S looks very good. Freesat HD and latest catch up and on demand services*. It's not a recorder out of the box but you can turn it into one by attaching a spare USB hard drive to the rear. All the recording timer functionality is already built in. Very slick intuitive interface, good pictures and small form factor. I have a Humax freeview model and can vouch for the excellent interface.

Detailed review here: http://www.trustedreviews.com/humax-hb-1000s-review.
£79 from: https://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/hb-1000s.html

*you'll need a wired ethernet connection for the internet based services (to hub/router or via homeplugs things)

I have this

http://www.zgemma.co.uk/zgemma-h.2s

It is small and good, it looks just like sky if you put the slyk skin on it and stops the other half complaining about learning something new....

Plug in a USB harddrive and you have recording capability.

Anyone any experience with the VU+ Solo/Duo boxes?

Considering splashing a bit of cash on a good box and Sly skin.
Or should I get a Zgemma?

Got a Openbox but the TV guide just doesn't cut the mustard.

We bought a second hand, less than a year old Humax with recording for £50 off Gumtree - its faster and easier to use than the Manhattan that I was considering, at same price and so far so good.
Tech moves so quick, folk just sell stuff to get the 'new thing'.

We've also got a Humax Freesat box and have had no problems with it. Have a look at the refurbished models on the Humax website as well.
Got ours from there and it looked brand new.
