A friend has an issue with working conditions under his current contract. He's not an employee but a freelancer. The company is making him work longer hours than he was expecting although he does get paid hourly, but they have also told him they may have to stop his contract with only a days notice.
Is there an appropriate union for him, would they take on representing him if he just joined and paid his subs? Is there a probationary period during which he can't vote on union issues? Would a union get involved in a collective settlement for all the freelancers at the company?
What does the contract say ?
If he attempts to get unions etc involved then he'll be out on his ear IMO.
Or is this an April Fool 🙂
Freelancers / contractors union
🙂
You naughty, naughty man
The good old prospect union tried to recruit me at Sellafield when I was a contractor 🙂 made all sorts of promises about what they could do for me....
I'm assuming April fools though I'm sure any of them would be more than happy to get your cash.
There's a big freelancers Union in the US but j think it's more like a clearing house for health insurance for self-employed people
I believe a lot of the creative industry unions have lots of freelancers and contractors - NUJ, Bectu?
The TUC website used to have a wizard that would help you find the right Union depending on profession and sector. I was a GMB member at work when no-one else was
Must be a April fools! Contractor = bigger risk = bigger reward
