Hi there.

Does anyone know a good website for downloading music that isn`t full of viruses and bad things?

Cheers

Why not actually pay for some? Guaranteed no 'bad things'......well, I guess that depends on your musical tastes.

How do you earn a living? Would/could you still do it if you didn't get paid?

Spotify is legal, but you're not downloading it. You can listen to the tracks you want, when you want by streaming them (so it doesn't eat in to your bandwidth/ data allowance). You do get adverts, which is why it's free.

Like the others said, no such thing as a free lunch.

Spotify, and audacity to record it, then its easy to edit out any ads. Great for odd tracks, but a slight faff if its a whole album you want.

Seriously? Do you actually do this?

If so that is the saddest thing I have heard in years.

Thanks.
I have no problem with paying for them but have heard that there are some sites that you pay a cheap subscription to and then are able to download what you want.
Didn`t realise this was such a tense subject.
Sorry

It's beside the point but as a matter of pedantry

so it doesn't eat in to your bandwidth/ data allowance

is complete nonsense. It's still data and doesn't get down to your computer by magic.

Carry on!

How does streaming not eat your bandwidth then? Do the magically appear in your speakers?

I use Napster I can stream tunes and have a allowance in with the subscription which gets me at least an album pet quarter to download.

Now, lets not shift the goalposts. You said free, in uppercase no less, and not cheap.

spotify premium might be the thing for you, alternately if you're after free, I've got a 6 track ep that you can download for free till the end of this month: Old Ghosts

Does anyone know a good shed/garage for getting bikes that isn`t full of locks and bad things?

Cheers

isn't Soundcloud more for unsigned bands that want exposure, so they give their music away for free?

What about if i only download music by artists that have died?

The only person making money out of this is some fatcat media mogul, so that would be ok wouldn't it?

So without wanting to be showered with a torrent of abuse but fully expecting it - Im glad to see that "us mountainbikers" never download Music for free (Illegally), have probably never ripped a CD from a mate without making a donation to the record lable or artist in person (or estate if they are dead) and, with halos shining above their helmets, always stick to bridleways, permissive paths and designated centres. I feel so naughty!

By the way well done Mr Nutt on the BBC introducing thing. All the best and I`ll certainly give it a listen. Thanks

Spotify premium lets you download to your iphone so you can listen offline. I don't bother with uploading / downloading MP3s most of the time now. 10 quid a month.

Not that I would EVER condone it but I do know a few people who use a site called Legal Sounds for almost free music. I won't give you a link as I think its immoral and wrong but google won't think that way.

It costs ( a little amount, $0.09 per track I'm told) but I doubt the record companies ever see anything... which is why I'd never use something like it of course.

They've not had any problems, they tell me, and have been using it for years. They think I'm mad, I think they're robbers. ho hum.

Personally I prefer CD's and then rip them for MP3 use but maybe that's just me these days.

Mooly, I just realised when I was riding home, that the album I said was the best riding music of last year is available as a (legit) free download! Well, a mixtape version of it anyway.
www.theglitchmob.com/music 🙂
As someone who likes a bit of Shit Robot, I'm sure you''ll find something on the site that appeals.

DezB - That`s great. Had a little listen at work and tried to purchase on the way home but couldn't find a copy. Must be my lucky day. Cheers

Err that's not legal either.

Not strictly legal, but.....

Copying CDs

It’s okay to copy music onto an analog cassette, but not for commercial purposes.

It’s also okay to copy music onto special Audio CD-R’s, mini-discs, and digital tapes (because royalties have been paid on them) – but, again, not for commercial purposes.

Beyond that, there’s no legal "right" to copy the copyrighted music on a CD onto a CD-R. However, burning a copy of CD onto a CD-R, or transferring a copy onto your computer hard drive or your portable music player, won’t usually raise concerns so long as:

- The copy is made from an authorized original CD that you legitimately own

- The copy is just for your personal use. It’s not a personal use – in fact, it’s illegal – to give away the copy or lend it to others for copying.

-RIAA ....American industry body, but they ARE the shot callers.

...and

This is the law, under the European Union Copyright Directive (E.U.C.D.) of October, 2003.

Music and movies:
Legal - making temporary, erasable copies (e.g. to an mp3 player, a CD-RW or DVD-RW, a computer hard drive, etc.).
Illegal - making any permanent copy at all (e.g. to a CD-R or DVD-R). This law applies, even if you own the original disc.

I second emusic, it's the indie iTunes (there's plenty other than indie rock on there though).

Oh, it's not free either, but it's good value and very well laid out.

The best illegal site was Audio Galaxy, but that bit the dust many years ago.

I use www.emusic.com - I pay £15/month for 90 downloads, all fully legit. I think the prices have gone up a bit since I subscribed but still vey reasonable.

For high quality electronic/dance bits, www.beatport.com
