Just finished The Complete Stories - not read her before, although I've been meaning to for a while.
Tough, brilliant prose - and often genuinely unsettling. Holy fug, were she still around, she could probably out-gun Cormac McCarthy.
She's also been immortalised in a song by my favourite grunge band:
Youtube blocked on this computer, MrA. 😕
Who is it?
edit: seems she's been quite an influence on American music - for one thing, I now understand what Sufjan Stevens is on about in A good man is hard to find.
I read "A good man is hard to find" a few years ago. Excellent. Thanks for the reminder, I was looking for something to read.
Maybe it's better that your ears are spared, but it's Killdozer's song "Lupus", which is, er, sort of a celebration of her life and work:

Wise Blood is one of my favourite books and the film with Brad Dourif is a John Houston classic.
Also immortalised in song by Gang of Four
(A Man with a Good Car)

Ooh, me delicate ears... Ta - interesting how these things, uhh, percolate thru kulture.
Lupus: she was certainly a tough sort. Probably explains the unflinching stories - almost too much to stomach in some cases (The lame shall enter first), but generally a supreme blend of sharp writing, wry humour and astute observation.
Wise Blood
I'm definitely lining that up.
Wise Blood is one of my favourite books
Just finished it - brilliant book. As hilarious as it is disturbing.
Enoch's encounter with the gorilla is still making me laugh.
