Haven't played anything for a few months, a rare night in alone tonight & so think I know I'll have a quick blast on GTA5 - this was about 30minutes ago, on booting it decided it needs to download updates, it's now on 5 of 9.... so much for that!

At one time we'd have to suffer the bugs but now they fix them and add new content. I agree it's much better now.

Format?

I get that on the Xbox, takes a couple of minutes.

PS3 - I don't mind the odd update, but I don't see why it can't be one file, why does it have to 9!

Ah, that doesn't surprise me. Pretty much my experience of the PS3 online, I'd rather pay £20/year for XBL Gold.

Where the exact same thing happens?

Back in the day, they used to finish debugging the games before they sold them.

The bugs were half the fun in Goldeneye multiplayer.

Er, no. The Xbox still gets updates of course, but they only take a couple of minutes.

Reminds me of loading this bad boy up.

What kind of messed-up not-Spectrum format is that screenshot from?

I remember loading games on this sort of thing, or even spending a day ( incorrectly ) typing in something from a magazine only to find out the next month that there was an error in the code, I think we have it pretty good these days.

Gta V gets updates every 4-6 weeks, I don't recall any fixes since the very first few weeks and almost all were caused by people circumventing the game to cheat.

The vast majority are updates with new free content, new guns / cars / events etc - so even now 12-18 months after it came out they're still making it better.

If you want to play off-line without updating just disconnect from your wi-fi.

You can just choose not to download the updates. That means you can't play online but if you're just after a quick blast then it's not really a problem.

My updates (PS3) always download quickly but then I've got fast broadband. Not really fair to compare downlaod speeds by console when it's probably the user's location and internet connection that decides it.

You can also choose too sit on idol mode then boot up in the early hours to keep itself and games up to date.

I hadn't touched my ps3 in about 2 years there, bought the last of us. Outstanding game. Aye I had to up date the ps3 but it only took a few minutes.. Only took a hour to download the game aswell something you couldn't do pre ps3.(out with torrents)

Put it this way much as I loved growing up the 80s and witnessing the technology grow up along with me. In 1985ish if you gave me a choice of a speccy or a ps3 I know what I'd be choosing! 😆 and wouldnt be the holding the play button in and adjusting the tape deck screw to get dodgy barras games working! 😆

Back in the day games only took 4 weeks to write.

Game 101

all games have bugs, no such thing as a perfect game even a patched one.

Gran Turismo 6 failed it's last update.
Six hours to reinstall.

Yes, we have a crap connection.

Remember this?

Congratulationt!

Not sure if that was deliberate - a way for those who'd actually completed it to check their mates weren't bullshitting.

it's not as if you don't have to jump through a few thousand hoops first

Sony -> Technical Requirements Checklist (TRC)
Microsoft -> Technical Certification Requirements (TCR)
Nintendo -> guidelines (Lotcheck)

in the past (and maybe true today) you would need to get the OK from Sony to start a game for their consoles. I worked indirectly for a french company that ignored Sony and went ahead anyway 2 yrs later and they refused to allow it to be released, they went bust.

Then turn on automatic updates overnight. The system will turn on, check for updates, download them, install them and shut itself down. It was at one point only available for PS+ but now available for all.

XBox has the same. Yesterday's Destiny update was 2.4GB regardless of platform, for example.

Destiny is a total pain in the ass; by far the worst experience I've had on a console.

You MUST be online to play,
The NAT protocols for the Destiny server make Windows ME seem like it was rock solid; constantly kicking me out.
The support is woeful,
The need to be online means that at high points in the day, crashes and kick outs are common.

I HATE having to be online to play the single player campaign.

Also what happened to a good single player campaign?

Nobody else have "fond" memories of having to spend any hours downloading patches over a dial-up connection to get PC games to run, I product of the diversity of hardware of the time I guess.

Happy days...

I must have lost hundreds of hours failing to load Spectrum games, adjusting the volume and tone on the cassette player endlessly.

My fault for having stacks of pirated games on a C90, I guess.

I ditched my PS3 because I got so hacked off with being forced to download updates before I could play a game. Maybe it's not so bad it you use it every day, but I used to let a couple of weeks go between sessions. Then Sony made it worse by allowing automatic updates but only if you have a PS+ account. And don't get me started on Cinavia.

The Xbox One downloads them overnight. And plays MKVs without lecturing me on morality.

Just like Playstation.

You MUST be online to play,

I'm sure I've played offline when it launched as they ballsed the servers up.

Lets face it most old games were total rubbish.

You need some very rose tinted glasses not to dismiss 99% of them as buggy dross. Yes there are a few that stand the test of time but most were unplayable by modern standards

We have it ridiculously good these days.

If I'd typed this yesterday I'd have been saying I'd had no problems but now the 1.07 pach has totally broken Destiny on the PS3!

And don't get me started on Cinavia

It's certainly a pain if you want to play illegal content or even format-shift something you already own. Understandable that Sony do it and MS don't though, Sony are massive across the entertainment field not just in gaming.

This is something World of Warcraft has got very right - the patches are distributed on bittorrent and seeded by Blizzards servers. Usually get 6Gb patches (content upgrade) at a rate limited only by my crappy ADSL as most of Finland have already downloaded and started seeding by the time I get aroud to playing.

When I played WOW it best to avoid use the torrent download as it was pathetically slow.

Don't think any PlayStation will play MKV. Happy to be corrected on this though.

Online-only for offline games is the absolute height of bullshit isn't it. The day they can make their servers 100% reliable and accurate, that's the day it becomes merely bullshit.

Sold my xbox one in record time due to these bloody f'in updates required plus these days games are far toosophisticated and all fun seems to have been drained out of them.

I havent really felt the urge to play for 5 yrs now and I'm reasonably young.

I have officially grown out of computer games until they bring bk to production xbox original/N64 - remember the punisher, donkey kong wave racer, v rally pgr 1&2 where they actually handled realistically!!

Now I honestly coulfnt give a toss!
