All sorts of things might bring it down. You might well find fully comp is cheaper than tpft. Also you might find that insurance is cheaper on something bigger - particularly something unfashionable that new young drivers (who have lots of crashes) don't drive - doubtless lots of new drivers have crashes in 106s. The value of what you're driving is pretty much irrelevant even for fully comp, given most of the cost of a claim is the damage you do to other people and their property. If an Astra van really is that much cheaper, then get an Astra van not a 106.

How old are you Tom?

Insurance premiums are high at the moment, so expect to pay a lot.

I know that you say that your licence and your mate's are the same, but there must be something else quite different as well.

Sorry to rub it in, but I am feeling quite old and "wise" tonight and my insurance was £375 fully comp with protected no claims in a 3 litre BMW.

Mmm, that feels better, sorry but after the events of today I just had to say it 😉

Insurance companies are having a good drink from all the parents rich enough to pay these ridiculously high premiums. What they are in effect sayin is "we don't want your business, ut if we must, we'll have 3 times as much as we need off you".
I'm not condoning it, but is there any wonder why so many youngsters don't bother with insurance.

And then people like you wonder why their preumiums are high due to insurance companies covering the high risk that is a young driver and the uninsured drivers who kill people and cause major accidents. Young drivers have more accidents than older ones you know. Thats why they have to pay so much.

But in response to the OP choose a car thats not a boy racer car that will help. Find out about shorter length policy terms. See what it will cost putting your parents on as named drivers. As said earlier Comprehensive cover with a high voluntary excess. Lower annual milage will help too (less than 10k). You and your mate live in different area's I guess too.

If they really were charging a vast amount more than they need to cover the risk as you imply, then there would be a gap in the market - somebody could come in offering cheaper prices for young drivers, get all the business and make a killing. The fact nobody is, and these are the cheapest prices you can get implies to me that they're charging exactly how much they need to cover the risk, and that far from being ridiculous, these premiums are simply due to the amount the insurance companies expect to have to pay out due to young drivers' accidents.

Unless you absolutely have to, I'd wait a while, insurance is just silly and it's far cheeper just to pick where you live to be near work/beer/trails.

I waited till I was 21 (had a motrbike 16-18 for transport, then went to uni in Sheffield, then moved to live near my first proper job/town). I bought a classic at that point but if going that route be under no illusion it's a toy not transport!

The lowest you'll find is a fiat panda 4x4, unfasionable, cheep and not quick. But still expect it to be £1000+ to insure.

For first time insurance is something like

£1200 if yoru 16
£800 if your 21
£400 if your 25

And its a falicy that you should just do it to build a no claims, £1200 just to save £100 the next year???? Don't be daft!

pffft thas high!

I have a 1999 pug 306 1.9 TD. First year so no, no claims bonus, and I am 20. £700 or so fully comp. I do have my Dad on aswell however but cant see that affectiing the price too much.

May depend where you live aswell.

Tom - I just did you a quick quote for a Volvo 340 on one of the comparison sites - £1300 fully comp. As mentioned above, might be worth looking at something "unfashionable"?

Try Quinn Direct if you live with your parents or have any older siblings name them as drivers on the proposal insurance company like young people to have a stable home life apparently. If using a comparison site try fully comp with a big excess may be cheaper than third party. If you have had insurance on your Moped and not claimed you should be able to no claims discount.

Hope the above helps just spent a week on the phone trying to get insurance for my 17 year old so its based on what I found.

IME that wasnt the case, I had 2 years motorbike insurance, and so did my brother, neither of us could get any money knocked off quotes unless we went with the same insurers who were far from the cheepest anyway.
