Hi all, I've been advised by my bank to employ a solicitor so that I may gain Power of Attorney for my mum's business affairs. They said that it is a complex area and the time, cost and quality very much depends on the solicitor commissioned.
Trouble is I do not know solicitors and have no idea where to look for guidance and what to look for or ask.

Can anyone help me please?

With many thanks as always
:o)

unfortunately, from my own dealings with solicitors they won't be cheap. if they can charge you for it - they will. we dealt with a big firm and from that experience would probably look into a smaller firm where we might not be treated like their walking bank account.

Phone several, talk about costs up-front. Don't instruct anyone you don't like the sound of.

As people have said on your other thread, LPAs are a headache, but are no less of a headache for solicitors. Anecdotally, the OPG rejects more applications made by people who have legal advice than by those who do not.

I would try adn get a reccomndation.

A smaller firm that does private client work should fit the bill. I ahve been told this is not a complex area by a colleague but it's not my area of practice.

Theres an organisation called Solicitors for the Elderly who have a list of accredited and monitored firms who specialise in this area. Still not cheap though.

Thanks guys. Will definitely have a ring round and see if they do a free first consultation.

Unfortunately I do not know of others who have gone through this and so have turned to The Forum, as some of us do for those big life events!

With many thanks

a free first consultation.

As a word of warning and from experience the initial consultation is only "free" - if you don't engage them to do the work. Once you instruct them - the consultation is charged.

You might want to clarify this at the consultation.
