I work on an IT Help Desk, for under-grad students. One of our students, reading a Computing Science degree, has just visited us in a bit of a lather. It seems his PC has been running slowly, so he's been trouble shooting it, and killing off processes one by one. However, there is one, that sometimes takes up as much as 99% of the CPU time that he can not get rid of. He thinks he has a serious virus.
The name of the process? System Idle Process....

He's not browsing STW with the ads on then is he!

I guess it keeps you in a job though. Makes a change from telling people to switch it off and then switch it back on again all day.

could you not explain that this is some sort of program popularity exercise that the machine carries out to determine which app to give the most cpu to and that it's just reached the final round and is counting the votes?
(this would work better ont he phone I guess).
