sadly the fence is in great nick, 4 years old(apparently), - to be fair the fence does look 4 years old but one post is already rotted at ground level...... grrrrrr

So concrete spur, metal insert - opinions and are there any other options. I'm favouring a spur as I suspect it's better, however I think replacing entire post would 'disrupt the existing fence more than ideal

edit it's a wooden arris rail fence, 6ft tall, posts are 4 in wide, 5 in deep (bit fence fitted to is 4" wide

What type of fence?

Concrete spurs are good. About £15-20 for materials (bolts/washers/post/postcrete) and some labour. Postcrete is your friend :O)

Oh, and 4-5 years is about right for the softwood post to start failing. They took the good shizzle out of the treatment so it's less effective.

Postsleaves are worth a punt if you go down the post replacement route.

what timbur said.

if existing posts are concreted in try and get hold of some sort of big drill with a hammer only setting to break the concrete up on the side you're adding the spur.

What Luke says. Makes the job more palatable.

I do it commercially so have a breaker. It's almost a pleasure :O)

Did 12 the other Saturday. Gave myself the day to do it assuming concrete in the ground. After much coffee drinking and heal dragging I was done in 4 hours. No concrete and lovely clay soil so great to dig at this time of year.
