A while back there was a very informative thread on Fartlek training. Seems to have gone now when i try and search for it, probably a casualty of the great board hack of '08,

Anyways, I am going to try and incorporate a Fartlek session into my training, got a HM coming up soon, and was hoping for some tips. I grab the basics, run to a lamp post then jog to the next, but can it include walking? What would be the base running pace....easy/recovery or what? How long should the who session be?

So any peeps out there doing Fartlek i am all ears, cheers!

I think it's something that can be overcomplicated, all it means is altering your pace between fast and not so fast. How long you do it for, and at what frequency and intensity is entirely down to how you and your body feel imo.

I did a run on Monday which incorporated a sort of Fartlek session. Local football pitch, 2 laps to warm up, some stretching.

Football pitch:
----- Goal line

-----

----- Half way line

-----

----- Goal line

Edit: My drawing is crap and not coming across clearly, long = across the pitch, short = along the byline.

Start a corner flag and zigzag your way up the pitch. Jog - Long lines, 3/4" pace - short lines, do this up and back. Then 3/4" pace long and jog short, do this up and back. Then Jog short, 3/4" half way across long, then walk the last half.

Hope that makes sense?

2 laps warm down and more stretching.

Obviously you make the session as long or as short as you like, I use a football pitch because it is conveniently marked out and the ground is quite soft for running.

I do that on my bike - it's called "Mountain Biking". You go up and down hills...

You should try it! 🙂

its translated as 'speed play'

you go fast, you go slow, you go fast, then not so fast, etc etc

generally riders forget how fast they can actually go without feeling knackered and bumble along in a stupor - and yeah, I should know.....
