I want to change the name on my Facebook profile so it shows my maiden name only. An ex-pupil has tracked me down through my current name and I don't want them to do so again. I have deactivated my account at the moment but would like to reuse Facebook as it helps me keep in contact with friends around the country and overseas. I get the impression that I [u]have to have my current name as my profile name and show my maiden name alongside this. Am I right or can I go ahead and change my profile name to my maiden name instead. Facebook doesn't make this clear.
Cheers.

I don't think you can short of starting a new account just set your profile to private and don't accept the persons friend request.

Why not change your privacy settings, so you can't be seen ?

I have the maximum security setting and the pupil can only send me messages. I have blocked them from contacting me but they then did so through a friend's account (theirs not mine), this was also blocked. What I'd like is for them not to find me when they search for me. If I am under a different name they won't know who to look for. I don't think you can set privacy settings so that people can't find you if they search for your name...can you?

You can block a particular user so they an't see you at all, not even in a search

Well you could set up an account under a totally different name but your mates will think your weird. Can you report the person to the fuzz?

It's not bad enough for the fuzz, just a very, very needy ex-pupil with issues (yes school know all about them and the contact they've had with me).
All my mates would understand why the name change and as I said, the pupil has used other accounts to search for me so blocking them doesn't work.

I'm not an expert on this at all, but I think you can actually. I've no idea how you do it, but I spent a while looking for someone once who showed up in no searches at all, and could only be found by linking through other friends. They may have blocked me, but I'm sceptical.

You can change your name to anything you want. Just go to the "Name" section of your account settings and follow the instructions.

Probably best to carefully review your privacy settings. And go from there. I assume this is some kind of inappropriate contact. If so, then I'd be referring it to Facebook themselves.

Stop publishing your life online then.

A couple of people I know have put spaces in their name, splitting their surname inbetween the syllables for instance, whether its for the purpose of not being found in searches I'm not sure, but at least amongst their friends they're still recognisably their names, rather than having to operate under a nom de plume

Stop publishing your life online then.

Some people embrace and use modern ways of communication.

I had a similar problem...friend requests from parents of kids I teach etc.
In the end I set up a new account in my maiden name.
No problems now.

I have to say that I think any name change will give you only a temporary respite. Assume that this person already knows who your "friends" are on facebook. It's not gonna take them long to track you down again, is it?

If you want to set a cat amongst the pigeons switch to your maiden name, then change your relationship to 'its complicated' 🙂

I don't publish my life online, just keep in touch with friends who do! From what i read on Facebook you can't use hyphens etc in your profile name but it wouldn't be enough of a deterrent anyway.
If I set my privacy levels high enough then the pupil can't see me in others profiles.

Hi Kip
Click Account and go to Privacy settings
in the
Basic directory information
click view settings
in the 'Search for me on Facebook' it should be defaulted to Everyone
click here it gives you 2 further options.
So only 'Friends of Friends' or 'Friends' Will be able to find you if you are searched.
Hope this helps.

I'm with Cfh, if you don't want attention, stop with the online presence.

Soulrider:
Cheers. That's excellent information, didn't know you could do that.

As for stopping with the online presence check out yourself on http://www.123people.co.uk
sorry don't know how to do clicky. If you've ever been mentioned online (race results, etc) you may well be here. Scared me how much was out there that I didn't know about.

Actually looks like I do know how to clicky...didn't know I did.

Just did that 123 search thing, and d'you know what?

None of it was even close to me, nothing, no pictures, no facebook, nada.

Mind you, I haven't got needy ex-pupils chasing after me.

You can set it so you are unsearchable as well

I am pretty sure that if someone is pestering you then you can report them to Facebook. I am not really sure what they do after that but I doubt his friends will want him using there accounts if they start getting banned or warnings.

Maybe worth a try?
