Actually, my first thought when I saw what happened was that they might as well just unbolt the inner ends of the suspension wishbones and auction the whole lot as a collector's item.

No, that wouldn't achieve anything. They will be focusing on getting data to figure out how to set up for qualifying and the race, not headline times, but being that far off the pace is not part of their plan. Friday times don't really mean much though, I'd be surprised if both Mercs weren't in the top six in qualifying. I'd bet even money on at least one Merc being on the front row of the grid.

Well, I’m a Hamilton fan but in the interest of racing if that’s a manufacturer failure I feel for Max there.
Red bull radio message does make it apear it wasn't a wear problem.
