on the lumpy bits it was fairly normal temp, but in the meadow it was significantly cooler. like when there’s a lying mist, but with no mist.

Kind of like this weird inversion thing going on a couple of weeks back. It was about 25 degrees in the shade and rising, yet the pollution from that cruise ship wasnt rising !

wow, that's cool.

there was a report somewhere in the news that higher up, like aviemore, would be more roasty due to the cloudless inversion.

I saw an interview yesterday with a courier rider complaining about having to work in such high temperatures. He was wearing a hoodie.

As I was going home last night, it was horribly oppressively hot, the temp gauge on the car was saying 37 as I passed someone who was out for a run.

Why in the name of god would anyone do that? I was tempted to mountt the pavement and run him over for his own benefit and the good of all humanity. That would class as a mercy killing, wouldn't it? Just saving Darwin a job and keeping the gene pool cleansed

One of my colleagues goes for a run every day, hasn't stopped at all in this heatwave!

He was complaining of a headache this morning.

not even midday and...

The UK has experienced its hottest day on record, with the temperature reaching 39.1C in Charlwood, Surrey, according to provisional Met Office figures.

I once ran the Safaricom Marathon in Kenya. The weather in the Kenyan Highlands was parched, bone dry, with a beating sun! Training in this current heat would have been very useful, if only for short periods, and might have saved some of the odd looks I got from training on warm, sunny days while wearing unnecessary clothing. 😀

I think some 'elite' Strava runners/cyclist do it to show how awesome they are. The local triathlete clubs has a few 'elite tits' in it. Strangely this are the ones still posting about their awesome runs/rides in 38 deg heat.

Sensible people either dont bother or go out very early in the morning.

I would love it if we got weather like this for a couple of months every summer. West of Scotland at around 28-30C not south of England temps.

Lovely weather for being outdoors in the morning and evening. Fit aircon to keep the house a bit cooler and job done.

I was out for a run yesterday evening - before a swim in Loch Morlich. It was actually ok, possibly due to the relatively low humidity.

Fit aircon to keep the house a bit cooler and job done.

There's something you're not quite getting...

Some people can deal with it. In large parts of the world it's not at all unusual, so it's clearly humanly possible if you're acclimatised.

He looked that type. I should have run him over, shouldn't I?

I went up Ben Nevis last night and enjoyed the cool air. Am I in trouble for exercising?

That's a top tip for you all.

It's going to be more scorchio ooop North on the Eastern side, than down south today, weird.

It was 35o in my attic workroom yesterday morning. (Not worked for 2 days now).
It was 35o in the shade late afternoon yesterday.
It's now 37o in the shade. We live on the Derbyshire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester border.
This mornings 15 mile tandem ride was ok, until about 8.00 am. even descending at speed gave no respite.

Please put shallow bowls of water out for the wildlife at night. Reports of many hedgehogs dying from dehydration.

WFH at the patio table has been nice

Kids now coming home from school early after lunch and I've got a zoom meeting at 1, so no more sitting round in my underpants

I've managed some coding this morning but the home office is now at the point where even the desk feels warm to the touch. It's these heatwaves that make me miss living by the coast, it's no fun in the Midlands in this weather.

I've been out cycling in 35C a lot but that was in Australia where it was a dry heat and absolutely fine so long as you drank enough (water during, beer after). Actually enjoyed it - you feel really loose and there's no sweat because it evaporates instantly. But this is much more unpleasant with the humidity.

GMB Union are proposing that people shouldn’t be allowed to work above 25 degrees. Give me strength

I don't think the GMB union is proposing that people shouldn’t be allowed to work above 25 degrees. As I understand it they are proposing that when temperatures hit 25 degrees employees should be given the right to wear casual clothing, have access to hydration facilities, and for those working outdoors be provided with protection to minimise the risk of skin cancer.

All of which seem perfectly reasonable demands from an organisation which exists specifically to support the interests and wellbeing of its members.

What is wrong with protecting ones staff from adverse weather? Admittedly 25C inside is a tad uncomfortable but outside in full sun that implies weather that can kill the susceptible.

Heat stroke is a condition that can kill and is like a silicon chip getting too hot and melting down. Once it's in motion there's a good chance the patient will die.

Remember if the HSE takes one to court one needs to prove ones innocence.

Weirdly now the wind has just picked up massively from nothing to a gale !

I wonder if this is the start in the temp dropping off ?

I went to the Coop for some fresh rolls for lunch - not been baking today!

With hindsight it was to be expected.....

Those with substantial run streaks (I follow a few who are in to years) will have dragged themselves out this morning no doubt.

Pegged out some washing earlier. A blouse was virtually dry half an hour later.
FiL is in Lanzerote, its 26o there.
Pond is drying up, most plants wilting and all 3 water butts empty.

Watching the La Tour is making me feel even hotter.

Will it be 17o and rain when the children break up next week - I hope not?

Just been out for a lunchtime walk.

Going over this bridge:

Swavesey Pedestrian Bridge

(assuming that image loads)

and the tarmac on the surface was soft, gone very lumpy in places & was bouncy underfoot.
I thought all this talk of roads melting was a bit OTT, but apparently not.

Why are you watching a tower, and why does it make you feel hot?

Just left the shelter of my fan-and-frozen-bottle room to hang the washing out and put water out for the garden beasties - holy shitballs, that's warm.
