Have another hour to go before I finish my night shift and not looking forward to trying to get some sleep. Hopefully I can get at least five hours, might have to be cider induced though.

Not looking forward to work today, we ferment bacteria in 1400 litre vessels, which means we heat the media up to 125 Deg C, which means lots of steam. Plus we've got a contractor in trialling new equipment, which means even more steam!!

Yesterday was bad enough, felt my brain physically melt. 🤯🥵🥵

Just done 5km round the block- glorious at 6am in rural Wiltshire. Could feel the residual heat coming off the tarmac lanes, and the temp increase in the half hour I was out is huge- feels like midday already (24ish here at the moment).

Assuming it will be warmer than yesterday due to the warm night, but interested to see if we get the forecast thunder later!

Started at 23 deg today as opposed to 18 at the same time yesterday outside

It’s just rained so humidity is up at 70% as opposed to 30 yesterday

At least it’s cloudy at the min but if that burns off….

Not too bad here in Surrey, I slept OK. Although it's hot I think the dry heat makes a difference compared to our usual humidity, much more comfortable even for the extra few degrees.

On my commute yesterday morning and then late afternoon, I barely broke a sweat..... clearly not true, riding at normal speed in 35+ heat, but I think it was evaporating and blowing away as fast as i was sweating, so I never really noticed it. Still, I normally get all my fluid intake from tea and coffee and in addition to a normal intake yesterday I also drank about 2 litres of water. And yet this morning my wee was dark yellow, clearly dehydrated. I can easily see how dehydration and overheating / heatstroke can happen when it's like this.

dry heat makes a difference

Oh heck yes.

My limited experience of holidaying in circa 40 deg fully humid heat has been that yesterday was a piece of cake by comparison. In the humidity, sweat doesn't work. So you dehydrate in about five minutes.

Peaked yesterday in the garden (shade) at 37.2 deg C. Went for a run this morning at 6am and it was still 23. Currently working from home not the air conditioned office, but keeping an eye on inside vs outside temp and will shut the windows soon.

I wonder if any of theblowhard "it's only a weather forecast, it'll be wrong" gobshites will come back and apologise for their ignorance.

What we've seen is a forecast of extraordinary, never-seen-before heat, that was basically perfect on a one-week lead time or more.

This guy is good to follow

The models were predicting this spell almost 2 weeks ago, tho with a low probability

Last night was sublime. Mates came round once the direct sun was off the decking and we lounged in the pool for hours with beers and tunes, and sat with the heat radiating from the tall brick walls until late. Really felt like being on holiday.

"low probability" could be a bit misleading there, there is no probability at all attached to the forecast, it was a single deterministic "best estimate" simulation, over a time scale that it's not really considered reliable or usable for official forecasts.

Ie, this map wasn't particularly forecast with any probability at all, just suggested as a possibility. And as you can see from the pic, it was a few days wrong with the timing (Sat 16th 1800h), though basically correct with the magnitude of the event.

@StirlingCrispin

Out of interest, which weather station are you using in the garden?

The mention of "almost routine" is also dubious. How often have they predicted highs but been wrong.
After all the express promises snowmageddon every year and occasionally gets it right for a day or two.

Well, starting day 2 of WFH "extreme heat" edition, a mere 3 degrees cooler than we finished yesterday.

Room still in shade, a toasty 28C already 🙁 melting...

6am spin on the road bike, which in itself wasn't unusual, but zero wind, 18°C and some lovely early morning sunshine, basically the nicest conditions I've ridden in all year 😎

On this forum surely the solution to this heat wave is strict mask wearing and a 3 month lockdown? The gallows for anyone who disobeys.

Arrived in Whitby yesterday for a short break and after the obligatory fish and chips we walked out onto the breakwater. When we walked onto the breakwater extension the temperature seemed to drop by about 10C and was very pleasant. Definitely heading back today but after getting some tree shade in Dalby.

@Crossed
Sainlogic Professional WLAN Weather Station

It's a rebranded Fine Offset, but they all are.
https://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/psg04173/weather-station-wifi/dp/IN08375

Sits on a big pole (Screwfix) in the garden.
Base station communicates with the Wifi router and uploads every few minutes to Wunderground and the MetOffice (WOW) Weather Observations Website.

For years I ran a Maplins USB Pro weather station via a Raspberry Pi but this is far more reliable.

The Express lies routinely. Anyone who reads that crap deserves what they get, but it’s the Express to blame, not proper weather forecasters such as the met office.

I went out for a ride this morning. go me..

it was 14 deg when I started at 6, couple of hours later it was 21 and the sweat had already got too much for my Halo headband.

I don't do well with heat, so quite glad I'm not south.

interesting, thought about building a Pi-based one for ages (no real reason, just as a project!) but if there's an off-the-shelf which is better & not mega-bucks, that's the favourite option!
Do you actually do anything with yours or is it just for fun/interest? Does anyone give you any kind of credit/reward for uploading data?

Nope! They got the weather forecast spot on for once - in fact, it was a bit hotter in the Derbyshire Dales than they initially predicted. That aside it was an absolutely glorious day. Glad I could enjoy it, rather than sitting inside with sheets covering the windows.

For all my shit that I spout, I do genuinely hope everyone's elderly relatives were ok though

My sister texted me at 8.30 this morning to say she was on the tube and was 'melting', to which my reply was "well WTF are you doing on the tube then, you mad ****? WTF did you expect?!"

She hasn't replied

Didn't drop below 24 upstairs last night.
Kitchen was a couple of degrees cooler.
Slept well though, did 20 miles on the e-Bike mid evening, stopped for a couple of beers just before the last couple of miles home and then watched Movies and eat Magnums until 12.

Currently have one member of my team off with heatstroke and the clients are complaining about the weather.

Clients are Saudi and colleague is also from the middle east.

It's a tad warm.

I popped into Hastings yesterday to buy some holiday clothes for the kids. In Primark at the tills it was pleasantly air conditioned.

Next to me one lady was complaining how hot Primark was and the till girl said she was going to go home as it was too hot to work. 🤷🏻🤯

I feed the weather onto Weather Underground and WOW.
Just for fun - and also because I find it fascinating.

Local differences are interesting too.
During the winter, if we get an inversion, I get far lower temperatures than stations just a few miles away and higher up (I am almost beside the River Forth at 15m). I can be at -9C and they will be at 6C. That's in 2 miles!
Rainfall is another interesting one: you wake up, look out the weather and go, "huh, it's rained". I know how much and when. #geek

https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/ISTIRLIN11

https://wow.metoffice.gov.uk/observations/details/?site_id=82b840ba-0891-e911-80e7-0003ff59883f&fbclid=IwAR0lsdBqpCgQPJH1ZUUTlvPEsn5c_lfzb0jMshzIF88fOBdhUN7_9Xa1NzI

Raspberry Pi.
It can be done but it is hard work.
None of the instruction sites are 100% correct.
Then MrsSC would unplug the Pi to vacuum. It was amusing to get a notification from California to notify me that she was vacuuming for the first time in months, but the station would need restarted, which was a faff.
Then the SD card would corrupt every few months and you'd be back to the start.

Yeah I had the temperature on my Garmin screen yesterday and the temperature varied loads depending on the surrounding environment.

it was weird last night taking the dog out over the nearby field. on the lumpy bits it was fairly normal temp, but in the meadow it was significantly cooler. like when there's a lying mist, but with no mist.
