Recommend me some stuff to do please!

I'm walking as much as possible.

I've got the turbo set up, but its an ancient dumb one, it can only take my (fairly racy position) summer roadie and currently a) I cant change gear as is my RH shoulder thats gone and B) I cant hold normal riding position 1-armed for long enough to be worthwhile, so I'm sitting bolt up right and watching youtube whilst just churning away. Its burning a few calories, but isn't going to keep me anything like fit.

I also need to get some core stuff in to keep my back working, but most of the stuff I know is difficult when you're desperate to avoid moving one arm.

For reference, I usually ride in some form at least 5 days out of 7, and theres usually a couple of gym sessions in the mix too. I'm desperate to avoid losing what little fitness I have and turning into a fat blobby couch potato. I also really need the mental stimulus of some good hard exercise!

Thanks

I wish. Sadly just a middle aged idiot who's *ed his entire summer in one tiny little loss of concentration.

...but who's really trying to avoid *ing his autumn and winter too...

I had the same issues as you except my turbo bike was a 1980’s Woodrup with the non-indexed campagnolo change levers on the down tube

I just did as much as I could upright like you until I could cope with putting a little pressure on the broken bone and then just worked as much as I could. As I had been advised not to ride on the road for at least 8 weeks and off road for 12 weeks by the time I could get back out I was fitter than I had been before the off.
I also found climbing stairs- we have 17 steps in our house- for many repetitions also helped with cardio and breathing early on although it annoyed my partner if I did it when she was in cos of the noise

I'm not sure whether you are upright or not on the turbo is going to really negatively impact how much of a cardiovascular benefit it has.

So, I'd be banging away on the turbo (singlespeed...) sitting straight up.

Walk in the woods. Nice to stay in touch with what we love. Hilly would be good.

Its more I can't do a "proper" turbo session with intervals etc, as that would involve too much gear changing etc. I also can't apply any real force to the bike whilst bolt upright and not holding on.

This is what I've been doing, but a) its so damn slow getting anywhere! b)its not really getting my heart rate off tickover. I walked 90 minutes back from the hospital yesterday. Just done about the same to go and trim back a hollybush on one of the local trails that's been blocking the path.

Its all movement, but I could do with something that actually stresses me!

I hate to say it, but you need a smart trainer and a subscription to a training platform of your choice. Trainer changes the resistance, you sit in the same gear and just pedal. Do you have a compassionate friend who might loan you one?

Did you end up having your break operated on?

I went for my first physio session yesterday following my tumble. The most strenuous it got was lying on my back moving a walking stick from one side to the other.

High cadence intervals are all the rage at the moment 😉

Loads of zone 2 will see you emulating Pogaca in no time.

I had a pulmonary embolism at the end of Feb and couldn't walk 1/2 mile or speak more than a handful of words initially. After 4 weeks, I was walking 50 miles per week at a decent lick. Another month, back to running and riding but capping heart rate at 150.

The slow stuff isn't good for ultimate performance but most of us aren't anyway. Lots of low intensity stuff, especially when you've no choice is a good fillip. You can work on your top end when your bones have knitted back together.

I was walking a lot more, but could get carried away investigating animal tracks, crossing brooks etc, I'm fairly sure i slipped and grabbed a branch more than once, which probably stopped it healing

You can borrow my Elite smart trainer until mid-October, if you like? (I know Jon IRL, before anyone else tries to jump on this offer)

It'll probably need an app subscription, but Zwift etc. can stick it in erg mode so you don't need to change gears.

I'm sure I read somewhere that during the cold war, with East German cyclists, if they broke a collar bone they'd have them on a turbo the next day hanging in a harness of the ceiling. Nothing but a broken leg would be allowed to interrupt their training.

@GHill - will mesage you.

@footflaps, funnily enough just been experimenting with an old climbing sling to work as a chest strap.

How long ago did you break yours? I broke my collarbone just over 5 weeks ago and have been on the turbo since week 2 one handed and upright (really hurts my arse :D) and walking a lot. Having a smart turbo was good as I could just pedal away in one gear and control the resistance with an app. I'm back in the gym doing leg stuff and proper position on the turbo now at 5 weeks.

@JonEdwards The first 2 weeks are rough eh? Did you get surgery or left to heal on its own? Mine was left to heal on its own.  I've been following this from the NHS for getting the arm moving and going off pain when to stop the exercises:

The doctor I seen at the fracture clinic didn't give me any info like that but its really helped me and I have pretty much full movement back in the shoulder/arm now but not putting much weight through it until my 6 week check-up.

If you have somewhere to hike (safely) it might be good for a bit more intense and interesting exercise than just walking!
