My Aunt and cousin are ardent brexiteers and live in Moggs constituency - they think the sun shines out of his backside.  NOthing can disuade him despite the fact they keep posting on faceache memes about lack of funding in the NHS and Moggs known desire to privatise it!

These are intelligent people FFS.

The Blond Buffoon knows that if he’s going to launch a successful attack for the top job, the timing means it’s now or never.

Or… make it clear he thinks we're "doing Brexit wrong", wait for the inevitable mess that will follow (any kind of) Brexit… then step in to take over, when the Conservatives will be more than happy to eject May.

2 leaflets through my door the other day. 1 extolling the virtues of the current government's spending record on the NHS, bigging up the Brexit dividend that they'll be pushing that way too, in addition to the additional contributions we'll all have to make to preserve the service we love. The other was a 'do you think you can trust him' attack on Corbyn.

Conservatives preparing for an election?

This. He can scream like Farage from the side saying everything is being done wrong without having to propose anything sensible.

Enough people will believe him but I am not sure they are eligible to elect him as party leader.

never fall into the trap of believing that educated or otherwise sensible people have the ability for rational thought when it comes to voting. It’s all prejudice, fear of change and whoever looks alright on tv

So, this icky ‘festival’ thing. Are we making entry for British citizens only (in keeping) or are we going to drop the pretense and just put up a big ‘Whites Only’ sign?

Assuming it is going to pay lip service to the reality of 2019 Britain, I can guarantee you there will be a mock-up curry house. But it will be flock wallpaper and the waiters will have 70s hairdos because that’s back to the days when ‘they knew their place’.

Brexit stinks.

David Mitchell on Boris:

nice article but Ian Hislop put's it more succinctly

people always ask me the same question, they say, 'Is Boris a very very clever man pretending to be an idiot?' And I always say, 'No.'

Every time Peter Bone opens his mouth I’m staggered that someone so profoundly dense has managed to get himself elected. Then I start wondering about just how shit-thick racist your average voter in Wellingborough is?

A Festival would be ok but what we really need is a Great Exhibition. Much more redolent of halcyon days when men where men, women knew their place and children went up chimneys or down mines.

After all the "mutual respect" pleas from our government the other week, our Foreign Secretary now decides to compare the EU to the USSR, and a prison. How to win the Eastern countries (not to mention the Germans) over to "our" cause. FFS.

And yet May says she won't rule out compromises.

Do ministers normally contradict leaders at conferences?  I don't usually pay attention.

This conference is just a giant leadership contest to appeal to the head banging party members.

Hence why Raab, May, Mogg, even Hunt keep spouting ignorant sometimes offensive or xenophobic nonsense about Brexit, even if it only makes negotiations more difficult !

It's way more complex ... given the number of non-white people who voted for Brexit and did so at least partly due to immigration.

I did mentioned earlier but I was living in France when the FN sweep was going 10yrs or so ago... and I know plenty of jews voted FN....who were pushing (at that time) a more anti-Arab than anti-Jew agenda...

Brexit stinks.

On one level there is no such thing.... there are people who voted to get rid of Polish workers taking their jobs and others who regarded them as stealing their benefits and others who voted to stop the mythical Turkish and others even more bizarrely who equated it with getting rid of people with darker skin... whilst others just wanted to set our own laws on bananas... or avoid conscription into a mythical EU army...

Most of these people would be at odds with each other... it's just they got sold the same solution and with the magic of social media tailored for them... It's lie a snake oil seller attending an arthritis convention one week with a set of claims, labels and advertising and the following week a diabetic convention... where the claims, labels and adverts all get switched.

And for all the doubts i have regards another referendum, this is one of the mosting compelling reasons to have one. What exactly is the result meant to be. When you voted leave, did you mean screw you Cameron, did you mean join EFTA, did you mean no immigrants or maybe you really do want no planes or food.

Why do you need planes? Are you some kind of weirdo who wants to leave the UK? Right your name is on the list as a traitor...

as for no food we survived in the wars didn’t we? Ok there were 20m fewer people and it was shit but we will be free....

And Junkers, obviously.

However, his proposal was immediately rejected by the British government, which said that there was “no prospect” of the UK agreeing to the creation of an EU army.

Veto innit bruv. 3 year old "news" story too. But other than that yes the EU army is as real as Turkey's membership.

Well at least an EU army might buy equipment from within the EU rather than the US or Russia boosting the chance of a contract for UK manufacturing.

the majority of the military machine seems to be about sustaining employment.

UN badge, NATO badge, EU badge… whatever… mobilising combined forces drawn from multiple national army/navy/airforce is increasingly the norm, especially for peacekeeping or defensive roles. I fully expect more EU cooperation now, with us doing our grumpy thing to one side, and USA retreating, but all deployed staff will be employed by nation states still… I can't see the remaining EU countries wanting to go further than that.

except that we won't be vetoing soon.

And Junkers speach after we announced Brexit :

"By 2025 we need a fully-fledged European defence union,” he said. “We need it. And Nato wants it."

Also more pushing for everyone to be in the Euro.

Precisely Kelvin - if we were remaining then we keep the veto and retain control over the direction of Europe. If we leave then they can do what they choose but when we subsequently rejoin we almost certainly won't replicate our current arrangement.   Schengen, Euros and all that could come thanks to those who didn't want them when we had the capacity to stop them anyway.

The US are pissed off that the EU nations don't pull their weight in NATO and having a combined force that could share those tasks would be useful in terms of developing inter-operability, joint training etc - which is the whole point of the big exercises they hold every couple of years. Similar with supporting UN operations. Only the tin-foil hat brigade / seriously deluded and retarded Brexiteer could read anything more sinister into this - they are not asking nations to give up their sovereignty. You are also reducing the risk of one nation going 'rogue' on its neighbours, similar to NATO article 5 commitments. An EU 'block' on the Russian border might be kinda useful.  Given the current state of the UK MOD where we can barely muster one operational destroyer, we are going to end up looking like one man and his dog.

There's a lot of talk about a theoretical "EU army."  Can someone explain to me why a combined EU armed forces is actually a bad thing?  And for that matter, why we'd want to opt out of such a thing rather than having it on our side?

So, this icky ‘festival’ thing

Ze Germans?

The French?

UK boys being under the control of some foreign power?

It's just another general distrust of the EU thing really, can't see a downside to closer collaboration and resourcing

I think at one point the concern was that an EU army would undermine NATO.

However, Donald Trump seems to be doing that just fine on his own now.

Once we're out of the EU, it'll be the other bodies we cooperate under… NATO, UN, WTO… that'll be under attack by the types that attack the EU now. Just follow the money back to US backers… and the data back to Russian stirrers… and you'll see the same forces attacking all those institutions. Hell, just listen to a few Trump speeches.

With the Brexit Sec now saying the EU needs to get serious I wonder if the EU team had a special set of BS bingo cards made up - on expenses of course - for the tory party conference. If I was cruel I'd make sure I had the entire lot on a short video to play at the start of the next negotiation.

I wonder how the Tory plan to cut low skilled migration squares with the previous plans of creating a highly skilled work force?

I can very much see massive changes to the benefit system where if you want to claim you have to do the low skilled work. A bus will collect you at 3am to take you to the field... Or a move to you can only claim if you have paid in...

Good to see Arlene foster progressing the likelihood of a united Ireland and ignoring that the majority in NI voted against brexit

DUP leader Arlene Foster has said the Good Friday Agreement could be altered to accommodate a final Brexit deal.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Ms Foster said it was not a sacrosanct piece of legislation.

Ms Foster said it was deeply frustrating to hear Remain voters and what she termed "people in Europe" talk about Northern Ireland as though, she said, we cannot touch the Belfast Agreement.

Things evolve even in the EU context, she added. There had been a lot of misinterpretation, she said, holding up the Good Friday Agreement as a sacrosanct piece of legislation.

Ms Foster also praised what she called Boris Johnson's positive vision for Brexit and said she could work with him if he became prime minister.

Does anybody actually read the telegraph?

Did anyone mention to her that if any party secured enough votes to win an election that the DUP will be kicked back into touch to rant on the sidelines again?

Her point seems to address that a change of leader will not result in them pulling support if its borris. This means tories can go for it and not have the high risk of an election and half a chance of seeing out the term.

It is the opposite of what we should be doing.  Educate/train British people to do the better paid slightly more skilled jobs while using immigrants to do the crap jobs for lower money

Shhh you don’t want an educated society that works cross cultures and borders in the global world. They are much harder to manipulate.

you want people who don’t quite understand what is going on then you can steal their money and run off to the sun...

Well as there is no system on paper or deployed in the home office to classify and vet immigrants doing nothing will result in no one coming here to work.

I think all the people in the UK arm of my employer are resigned to redundancy as the business cannot cope without free movement of people and goods. Mind you the management have been looking at India and China for years. Just waiting for the excuse

It's not difficult to find estates full of ****less lazy bastards who refuse to work in this country, there's hardly a shortage is there.

If anything good will come of this at least it should be to force these people to work as opposed to moaning about how there's no one to do low payed unskilled jobs.

No but how many of them are in (low cost) commutable range of the fruit & veg farms that need people to do the work?  You gonna collect them all in a bus each morning?  Or maybe we could build some places for them to stay while they are employed... some sort of house to work in... what could that be called in the brave new world?

Ahh… Great Britain… where we have low levels of unemployment (unlike those countries "damaged" by being in the Euro) but we still get to blame our ills on the tiny number of people of working age not working.

Brexit supporters I know also get very ranty about people "living of the state". It's the same mindset. Scapegoating… while supporting policies that will probably damage all our lives.

Well the resident unemplyed population largely lives in an area due to accidents of history.  They were born there, schooled there and have stayed there.  A migrant population (by defintion) will always be more flexible about where it can work.  Social mobility is a complex issue to solve, but it's not the EUs fault that successive governments haven't done a better job of it.
