Do they do what they say on the 'tin' or does it depend on your own metabolism ? going out all day riding on Tuesday into Wales so wondering what to take..

just take some real food - cereal bars from the shop - it'll be much nicer. energy gels are good if you've bonked, for racing etc but they really are not that palatable - even the best ones (torq) are only as good as a supermarket bar and expensive.

A mate gave me one a few weeks back when I'd bonked, worked a treat. Much more effective than cereal bars, and I usually have around 6 geobars in my pack

For a long day pack sandwiches on wholegrain bread with tuna or cheese in for a bit of protein to stop the total depletion. Good complex cabs as well. Bananas or dried banana chips as a snack (or jelly babies), and malt loaf.

Take a couple of gels in case of emergencies.

Loads of water too - food is useless without water to "free up" the energy in it.

I've tried the SiS Gel and ones from Decathlon, the SiS one worked a treat, almost an instant 'hit' after i'd had it.
