Hello,

Hoping some locals can bring me up to speed.

What's the deal with getting into the centre of town at new years ? I dont want to attend the street party me and a couple of mates just want to go to a pub on rose street.

Do you have to have a ticket to get in etc or is it just princess street which is shut out ?

Looks like rose street is not part of the closed area

So looks like we can drink in rose street and watch the fireworks from the side street at midnight...

I wouldn't bet on being able to watch the fireworks

well the pub is on the end of rose street (amber rose) if you step out onto the road and look south towards the castle you are smack bang in front of it.

In theory, but Rose Street will be so busy, you'll be lucky to even get to the bar.

Opening time would be best 😆

Seriously, it does get extremely busy in the city centre on hogmany.

Seriously - those that are saying opening time are 100% correct. I would also add that you can have a seat or beer, but not both.

Aren't they expecting circa 100,000 people again? All going to your pub!

Hogmany in Edinburgh is something everyone should do once. But IMHO once is enough. The best option is to entrench yourself in a local restaurant, just outside the zone and then stagger out onto north bridge for the fireworks.

100,000 in the amber rose, now that would be impressive 😆

Lived in Edinburgh my whole life and never go anywhere near the centre of town now. Used to go to some of the pubs off the High Street/up the Bridges are they were all packed out and about ten deep at the bar. We used to go buy about four rounds each visit to the bar. Can't be arsed with it anymore.

Hae a carry oot up Carlton Hill. Good view of the fireworks if the wind's in the right direction.

It isn't that good in town any more, it killed the soul of it when they introduced the ticketing. And considering that the "overcrowding" the last year before they introduced the tickets was no such thing, just incompetent preperation, policing and crowd management, that annoys me. Can't be bothered with it now, it's just as much hassle and not half as good.

Get into town early, fill your 3 litre camel back with a good mix of Gin and Tonic and waterproofs then just get stuck in. Carlton Hill is a good option, taxi and busses are all running (still waiting for the trams), Quite a lot of pubs are ticket entry or one out, one in and folk on the door deal with this. Its all friendly but like someone posted, beer or seat, not both! There is a concert (Madness I think) in the gardens but you need tickets for that. George st has some good bars but rose st or the west end will be heaving.

We are off to Biggar and the traditional hogmanay massive bonfire in the centre of town for a change....

Good luck!

Ticket entry for the pubs ? As in you need a street party ticket to get in ?
