But where is he going?

Surely he cant be following Robert Peston into the world of commercial news broadcasting given all of the stick he’s given him since his jump from Auntie?

I like Mr Marr.... Nice and sincere interviewing style.

Shame.

His other sit-ins I'm not so keen on.

Very sad to see him go. Loved his dry, laid back wit. At the close of the nightly news once "Send e-mails to pm@bbc.co.uk. Or don't bother, to be honest we don't actually read them".

Also he is Mrs Kenny's, sister's boyfriend's cousin......so he's pretty much family.

Probably deemed the wrong gender. THe BBC does seem more interested in having the right gender and race profiles, rather than the best talent.

Well, if so (And I doubt very much, that is the reason), it will make a real change from the underrepresentation and absence from key roles that still plagues the media in general.

Auntie's gone a bit pro-brexit, unquestioning Tory spin bulllshit so likely off to somewhere like CNN/sunny beach. Shame really. Oh well.

Refused to lower his salary apparently in light of the gender / equality pay revelations, if reports are to be believed. Much as I’ll miss him, perhaps he’s exercising his free market right to take his talents elsewhere...

Auntie’s gone a bit pro-brexit,

Really? I don’t sense that. If anything, they are having to be careful not to lay it on too thick because there’s just so much ‘anti brexit’ material at the moment it’s just daft.

Well, I hope it's the trigger that makes R4 drop iPM - the only other item that makes me want to smash my radio to bits as much as Thought For the Day.

Sounds more like it, but  would support the BBC to be making changes to make sure things get more equal quicker.

Hmmm. Mixed feelings. I get what he was trying to do with PM and 20% of it worked. Every now and then you thought wow that was radio  journalism but unfortunately he also belived his own hype and that not only showed up too much in every broadcast but probably also led to him leaving.

Hope they dont replace him with a typical r4 stalwart and get a new face

For those banging on about wrong gender etc ffs he is gay and scottish how much more r4 could he be?

Mair could dish it out but he couldn't take it.

At the time the BBC equal pay issue kicked off he interviewed a member of the BBC management and asked why being in possession of a penis increased your pay (yes his words) and demanded to know how she was going to fix things. She said, quite logically that they could lower the pay of the male broadcasters and give the surplus to the female ones. Then she asked him how much of a pay cut he was willing to take. His answer....total silence. She had completely cut him off at the knees. The guy is a tosser and I'm not sorry to see him go.

Blimey - what a weird conclusion. Did he 'demand to know' something or ask a question (as you'd expect a radio interviewer to do)? Anyway, I'm with the earlier posters and think he's made pm the best of the R4 news shows.

Eddie really makes R4 PM one of my favourite radio programmes. Mind you, I also like thought for the day and iPM.

I hope they replace him with someone with a bit of humour. Nick Robinson maybe?

I think male BBC employees find themselves in an odd position. They now (maybe always) know they are frequently paid more than their female counterparts but they also know they are paid less than they commercial counterparts. Yes they are all paid handsomely in comparison to the average person on the street but that appears to be the going rate and more our problem than theirs if we can’t handle  it. But to sort the gender pay gap by reducing your pay when you believe you are already underpaid would be hard to stomach.

If you were told your colleague was being underpaid and to sort it out they were going to cut your pay and give it to them but at the same time another firm was offering you a job with a pay rise and you had a mortgage to pay what would you do? It’s a no brainer.

Friday evening for me starts with PM, a G&T and a packet of baked crisps. I'm going to miss him. What will do with my middle aged (I'm only 33!) Friday evenings now!

Simply putting his mouth where his money is. As above, gender pay inequality is wrong, but substantially cutting pay to correct it is naturally going to make people consider their options. It's hard for Mair to feel substantial loyalty for the BBC if they are trying to slash his wages.

He's going to LBC for considerably more money than the BBC were paying him.

I like him - right mix of being able to hold politician's feet to the fire, but also humanity over such stuff as the Steve Hewlett interviews and Geoff's trip to the record shop.

The interview where Mair actually cut through the Boris Johnson amiable blunderer act and gently but relentlessly took him apart:  "You are a nasty bit of work, aren't you?". Brilliant stuff.

Oh, good… a golden opportunity to start to ruin PM, and make it the early evening version of what The Today programme has become. That's my prediction for 2019.

Yeah. makes no sense to employ a man when you can get women much cheaper 😉

I like the show.

Unsurprising that the self righteous here are happy to criticise him for not taking a massive pay-cut - you would of course do that?

I like him. Boris Johnson walked away from that interview with a brand new arsehole.

I like Eddie but I got the impression he had given up trying to take anything seriously any more. I can't say I blame him but you can't really do that job without being a bit serious. His taking the piss out of Peston was amusing but I can see that he thought, "hang on, he's on to something here".

That double act he did with Peston was pretty poor IIRC.

I like Eddie Mair

A couple of months ago hew was talking about the World Economic Forum. He introduced the piece by saying

In Brussels this week there is a meeting of the World Economic Forum, the WEF. WEF? You might be asking WTF!

Great stuff on Radio 4.

I wonder who he's replacing on LBC, when the made the announcement, they mentioned he would be joining Nick Ferrari, James O'Brien, Ian Dale, the one they omitted from the weekday, daytime line up is Shelagh Fogarty, who currently presents the early afternoon 1pm - 4pm slot.
