A bit late to this one but what a good film, Urban managed to pull off the darkness that Stallone lost in seconds. Keeping the lid on for the film worked. Really liked how they melded in the present and future.
Awaits a sequel...
Yeah. Very pretty movie, too (in a brutal sort of way).
Yep, very decent and made good use of the (small) budget. Thought Urban naked it. Unfortunately it didn't do well at the cinema and although it's done well on home media it's probably not enough to get a sufficient budget to do the larger scale sequel I'd like to see.
Good topic on it a while ago (on his character from the comics):
http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/dredd-any-good
Sequel? Sadly not. Sad really but unlike Batman etc (all big Marvel/Yank/established stuff) theres no commercial market for Dredd to people who have never read 2000ad really huh? 🙁
never really read it but appreciate the grittier side of life. Much better when it feels real (apart from the bit with the massive guns)
I just wish they'd got into the city a bit more to show more of the possibilities of things that could be done with a sequel. I enjoyed it though.
Watched it the other night. Good movie. Lovely cinematography and general visuals.
Some of the acting was a bit ropey, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
One film I will be re-watching again very soon is Black Dynamite
Freudian slip?Thought Urban naked
I enjoyed it as a 2000AD/Dredd fan, though it wasn't fantastic by any means. That said it was like a million times better than the Stallone *****. Didn't see why it was compared with the raid so much, vaguely similar setting/story but it really wasn't that great
This is the only film I've ever wished I'd seen in 3D.

Whoops!

Still not there for me, 10mins could have been cut of indulgent look at my 3d effects baby
sign up for a sequel
Nah, one was enough. Think I'll stick to the comics.
Rewatching this now. Love its not CGI big blockbuster money. It has almost a world cinema/indie feel and very very graphic- the way bodies act like tomatoes to rounds etc
Really enjoyed it and still fancied the hell out of Lena Headey even with the scar 🙂
100% better than the stallone tripe.. was much closer to 2000ad than i dared hope. look forward to a scorched earth sequel.. or even dare i whisper it THE comic book character that would make a brilliant movie..
Rogue Trooper..

Rogue Trooper..
4th rewatch. Its bloody brilliant. I get it now.
judge death needs to be in the next one.
Another wont happen. Pardon the pun but its criminal.
Pirates of the carribean V etc will
Rogue Trooper..
A genetically engineered soldier, brutalised by the acts of violence he commits in war, slowly goes mad and starts talking to his equipment.
very enjoyable movie
and not a 2000AD fan
Yes. Gory but effective.
its the dredd day of action

What is there to get ❓ I feel like I've missed something because everybody loved this film, but I found it tedious, despite being a fan of the genre.
Give me the Stallone version any day! It gets so much right...not everything, granted, but the Angel Gang, the city, the block wars...even the humour is pretty authentic. And a Cameo by Hammerstein and Ian Dury? Genius!
*Runs for cover*

First watching I was expecting big things not a bloody VW campervan the tight ****s. Then I relaxed and let the visual, music score etc flow over me.
Thats when it clicked. If they'd spent MEGA-bucks on this it'd been lost in translation, as it was it came across as dirty, shitty and even reminded me of my Laser Quest days 8)
and even reminded me of my Laser Quest days
Yep, kids these day don't know what they're missing!
I thought it was ok but nothing special and not actually very Megacity - it basically could have been anywhere and being JD was incidental.
For me, it needed to show scale and give an impression of the city rather than just being a small scale (since it was basically all indoors - yes I know the budgetary reasons for this) and mundane view of it.
It should have been called 'A mundane day in the life of Judge Dredd'.

That's what I thought too. It was fine and all but...
1) Not enough 'Future Shocks' Demolition Man and Stallone Dredd did this better - although the tone was often a little off.
2) Megacity was a disappointment - just a current city with some more highrises. Would have preferred something much more cramped and blade-runner-esque. It didn't benefit from the flyovers at all.
3) Spoiler - the bad judges shouldn't have been used. There hadn't been enough context to make it seem like a big deal. We saw more bad judges than good ones.
4) Not enough humour. Getting the grit/cheese balance must be hard though.
It would probably have to be a big budget lengthy TV series to do the comics justice. Get the Game of Thrones people on the job!
BTW - today is a Day of Action to try and get the sequel made:

So we've had an entire thread about Dredd, and nobody has mentioned The Raid?
Well worth watching if you're a fan of OTT action where the police are trapped in a building full of people trying to kill them.
Dredd was good though - it's on Netflix somewhere so I may watch it again soon.
I didn't like Raid apart from the fight scene at the end.
I felt like I was sat inside a Thai restaurant whilst the staff dropped plates onto the floor all around me.

This - the film got so much better once they were inside, the outside bit was awful.
Pretty decent but not as good as The Raid IMO. It was mentioned earlier in the thread btw.

Why a Thai restaurant?

do it today and be part of the day of the dredd!
Heads up for any losers like me, it's on Sky 3D on Friday. The wife is out on monday so that's me sorted 😀 Might get some beers in.
Watched it recently, really enjoyed it.
As for the storyline comments, there is a good interview with the film writer and it talks about the story line decisions.
Long story short being that they didn't feel that they could do a scorched earth story line ( or similar long term storyline from the comics ) justice in time of a single film, and instead chose a more single-comic story line of the single building plot.
As for the city, I felt that the mega blocks were too evenly spaced across the city when they showed the wide shots, made it feel false. Reality is that you'd get em clumped together in pockets like high rise flats are.
Must watch again soon.
I grew up with 2000AD and thought it was OK on the first viewing and very good on the second
what changed it for me was remembering that Dredd in the comic changed with comedy phases and dark phases
they got the darkness and some of the humour, a sequel would do better as the fan base will have grown
I thought it was awful so dull but yeah looked good
I think the one thing you can say about Stallone's Dredd is that they had the budget and the scope to do some things very right- so for all it was a disaster in a lot of ways, that was Mega City One. The new Dredd was a better film in every way so it's a shame they didn't have a chance to really hit the visuals.
They've sold the costumes and props for Dredd, so it's highly unlikely there'll ever be a sequel. Pity.
Dredd has been done on film back in the 90's, in the cutscenes for the not-very-good Judge Dredd lightgun game...

two years in the isocubes for that sort of comment 😉
Who bought the costumes and props?
On a different forum I was looking at comic con girls and there was a pic of two guys in exact Dredd comic book costumes. Bang on detail. Will look for it
Oh I forgot:
5) The Lawmaster motorbikes - awful. I know they didn't have money, but it's depressing that the closest that anyone's got on film to the real thing* was on Batman!
(it's real in my head)

I'm sure I read urban kept the helmet but that was it. Must have been on eBay
I thought it was pretty average. Wish someone would do a decent Rogue Trooper movie though, could be much better than all the Marvel superhero crap.
I'm going to go back and watch the Stallone version.
Just seen the budgets:
Judge Dredd 1995: $90m ($143 adjusted for inflation)
Dredd 2012: $45m
So approx a third of the budget. Although I think Stallone got $15m of the original which brings it down a bit).
Both films were a wasted opportunity imo - such amazing content but not enough confidence from hollywood to let it be its own thing.

There was a big prop auction from one of the memorabilia places- I almost bought my brother a NO LOITERING BY ORDER OF THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT sign from the block, but it went a bit expensive. Some nifty stuff.
I was driving through Dingwall a while back and spotted a Stallone-Dredd H-wagon parked at the side of the road, bit odd.
[Damn just scanned though the thread and see I said the same thing 3 months ago...] I enjoyed it, the look (except the law master) was right but thought the story quite poor. An episode of a the comic rather than the under lying theme for a years worth of comic's (how I'd expect a film to be). The Stallone one makes me cringe, the Angel gang & ABC warrior being brief glimpses of the original comic.
I imagine most fans on here are fan of the comic.. I wonder what the later generation have to say
I wasn't impressed by the Raid, 90% of a elite tactical squad killed within first 5 minutes, man so unreal 😯
PS: Again Rogue trooper was always my favorite.. and I wouldn't want to see that made into a film.
<Eagerly awaits Gronk film>
Entire Dredd back catalog is now available on the iPad in 20 volumes.

I enjoyed Dredd by agree the bikes were bobbins.
Re. other 2000AD characters Sam Slade Robo Hunter would be great - perfect role for a youngish Eastwood
Slaine The Horned God would make a great 2000AD film.
I liked the Stallone movie and have yet to see Dredd. Saw a clip,of the car chase and it looked good.

MACH 1
Wolfie Smith
2000AD is a goldmine of movie potential
Del Toro doing a Nemesis movie would be awesome.
Probably the most 'movie-able' 2000ad character would be Halo Jones?
And I still think possibly the best Dredd film would be to use the 'America' storyline - for me that was when the character and world 'grew up'.
Watched this for the first time last night. Thought it was good.
The Raid was much better.
