Those here trying to compare this to Brexit appear to be seriously underestimating the mess Trump has made.

Brexit right or wrong depending how you voted is a UK issue, what Trump is doing is a world issue and basically taking a world leader to mid pack.

And now have to worry about health insurance..

I bet they are well happy.

doge also gutting social security, theres genuine concern the agency that handles payments to veterans, elderly etc etc may simply stop working

factor in the potential inflation from a trade war with China and youve got to consider the possibility of widespread civil unrest

Indeed. Brexit was a horrible mistake but his combined impact since inauguration, his attitude towards friendly nations including his immediate neighbours, Doge, and now his global tariffs is beyond an order of magnitude more impactful. And forget about the global impact (not getting the impression too many Americans are wired to even give that a moments thought)'- just the internal impact.

Question as I might have missed it - have the ex-presidents had anything to say? Not Bodhi and his mates, but the actual ex presidents. I know by convention they tend not to get involved....but we are way beyond convention right now.

And idle thoughts......Trump season 1, had the full cast of family members. This season - not so much. A lot easier to deny prior knowledge of upcoming and inevitable market changes if you are not part of the government.....

Team Trump is starting to panic, I don't think they have got as many countries begging for deals as they boast, major economies are not backing down, and the threats now coming from the US administration about countries working together, are signs that the plan isn't working.

As long as everybody stands strong against the US and not too many suck ups (I am looking at you Starmer) break ranks, then he will be gone before then end of the year IMO.

Trump won't go willingly, even if that happened, we can be 100% certain of that, just look at the events when the 2020 election result was announced.

I'm curious what happens when Trump dies...

Will those MAGA voters be as devoted to Vance (or whoever the GOP determine will be the Republican nomination at the next election)? I guess we'll find only find out whether the cult of Trump can transfer to anyone else. Certainly, no one else has Trump's personality or sense of theatre....

And I fear, Trump will have a third term by some means and "we" (the sane population of the world) will have to put up with this insanity until he finally dies.

On China: I think the motto "never correct your enemy when he's making mistakes" applies here. They just need to do enough to keep nudging the US in such a direction that their influence wanes towards non-existent

Well we, the sane population of the world, will quite likely have Nigel Farage as UK Prime Minister, so that should bring the UK and the US closer.

I think it's a bit of a jump to call the UK electorate a 'sane population'... but that said, Truss got kicked out in almost the same second she 'tanked the UK economy' so the damage was fairly limited.

It's a different scenario with the USA and Trump - there doesn't seem to be any easy way to depose him, and his party is pretty openly talking about him having an 'illegal' 3rd term...

If you own both houses and the judiciary, there is really notning stopping a person from doing whatever they want - and if they do try something, you can simply fire them. Or indirectly fire them by disolving the department they work in.

I really dont see Trump being in office too long - the sh1ts hitting the fan now, and people will be noticing how it impacts them within days when they go to their local Walmart. I hear some saying the short term pain will be worth it .. however, i also imagine the short-term pain they will be willing to endure will last about a month at most before they start kicking off. There will be countries, such as UK, who will be kissing Trumps ass, but they will also be gently stepping away from the USA too .. the trust has gone. Those who will pick up the pieces in the USA after Trump will very likely want to make an example out of Trump and those around him.

TBH I’m not a lover of Keir but I think its a tad unfair on him, he played Trump a blinder with the kings letter and you did just get a 10% Tarif, hanging back on retaliatory tariffs isn’t that stupid, don’t forget your dealing with a very petty and vindictive person and season 2 has only just started and it’s a lot of episodes to go before the season finale.

Hard to keep up with checks and balances when there’s no staff, someone’s been very smart in thinking how to take over a country legally.

300,000 people out a job in a very short time so a few more isn’t going to cause them much worry.

If only it was that simple. Nigel Farage, like Trump did in the presidential election last year, is attracting support from a growing number of Gen Z.

Much of the increase in support for the far-right in Europe is also coming from the youth vote.

The Left certainly have their work cut out and yet here in the UK at least they seem incapable of getting their arses into gear.

Ironically today's youth could learn a lot from the Boomer Generation which very effectively challenged a growing threat from the neo-nazi National Front by organising the Anti-Nazi League and Rock Against Racism.

I thought that Trump imposed a 10% tariff on UK imports because the United States has a £71.4 billion trade surplus with the UK and any country that the United States has a trade surplus received a 10% tariff ?

Where is the evidence that it had anything to do with Starmer?

I knew you were going to come back with that! Yes and no. It's  basically a statistics 101 but of sums.

As you obviously appreciate elections are won by very small swings in specific geographic or demographic population groups. And you are right to say that the populist right vote is growing fastest as a percentage of population in the younger voter segments. But it only has an impact on the final result (fptp or pr) because it's building on a firm base of boomers who were already ukip/reform or only needed to do a bit of bum shuffling to get there from the Braverman wing of the Tories. As a trend, on its own it's a worry that so many feel that way, but without the boomers it would just be that.

I'm not saying never, but right now statistically a UK with half the 65+ population it has right now would be hard pressed to vote in a frog shaped leadership hopeful. Not done the maths in the states, but my hunk is it would be the same there too.

A lot of Trump supporters are going to rethink their position in the next couple of months. How that plays out domestically, we'll have to see. Protests yes, more serious, maybe not just yet.

Trump - and more importantly his business backers - have underestimated the response to tariffs. I've no doubt lots of countries will have been in touch, but not many will have bent the knee. They've got that, and it's consequences, really wrong.

Trump won't quit. If he can be deposed, I don't know. A lot of the MAGA cult is built around him personally - anyone trying to depose him will face the January 6 brigade. Not sure the GOP nor Vance personally would be able to carry it off.

Keep it quiet - if you put services into the sum, my understanding is that we do well out of the Septics. Goods are fairly even, but we sell a LOT of services to them and currently hey aren't subject to this extra tax.

Out of interest, does anyone know what direct-to-consumer services such as Netflix subscriptions count as?

I'd have guessed they would be US-derived services and conveniently ignored for tariff calculation purposes (but I don't know!)

The largest economic superpower in the world is being run by a bunch of *ing Clampets!

With this kind of chaos going on, where you don’t know what’s happening from one day to the next, rather than encouraging firms to move their operations to the good ol’ US of A, I suspect most already there are looking to get the * out!

I'm wondering if this whole thing is just a massive insider trading deal. Knock the China tariffs on the head in a week or so for another huge market jump and he personally will have made a few more million on his prior knowledge of this manipulation.

At least send him to 'Git-mo' for a few years first... make the bastard suffer.

EU Commission secures backing for first countermeasures against Trump's tariffs

The European Union Commission has said it has secured backing from EU countries for the first countermeasures against US tariffs, which will be enforced on 15 April.

The 27-country bloc says the countermeasures can be suspended at any time should the US agree to a fair and balanced negotiated outcome.

This story is obviously mad.

I see someone has had a word with the picture editor and they've now replaced the picture of a shiny brass shower they were illustrating the story with. You could say that it looked golden.

What do your instincts tell you?

That he lost his nerve in the face of universal pressure from his own advisors and officials, other republicans, the fed, US businesses and billionaires, and foreign allies such as the UK and France. He's a narcissist, and probably realised that he was going to go down in history as the guy who single handedly crashed the US and global economy. He doesn't want that as his legacy.

Just like happened in the UK with Truss's nonsense, the markets won in the end. There's probably a lesson there in how we've designed a financial system where govt macroeconomic policy and the economy is at the mercy of bond traders who extract rent at will with very little fear of regulation or restrictions. They're a tax on the entire economy.

Hi everyone, I'm just back from signing a 25 million quid cheque to move my manufacturing back to the USA over the next 18 months. I sure hope it helps me avoid these tariffs and puts me on a stronger footing for the future.

What did I miss?

It's not the tariffs itself, although they are ridiculous and unsustainable, it's the bloody hokey-cokey he's playing with them so him and his mates can profit from the market volatility.

There's only so many times that he can pull this stunt before trading nations just ignore him completely and start making alternative connections with more stable trading partners.

The MAGA nutters on X are celebrating the stock market rebound as some sort of genius move despite the fact it is still down on where it started, and that they are really sticking it to China.

A cent for the thoughts of the manufacturing workers who were whooping and hollering about bringing manufacturing back to the USA only a few days ago.

Exactly, what company will spend millions/billions relocating manufacturing, only to see the tarrifs abandoned, meaning you'll be undercut by foreign imports.

The flip-flopping is the worst of all worlds.
