Which other countries put a limit on how many times you can serve as President/Prime Minister?

Well Russia actually, but....

**** Putin got round it by installing Medvedev as president for one term then returning to president.

Turkey did have. Erdogan sidestepped it initially (by ending second term early which somehow bypassed it) but think he has got completely bored of it.

Venezuela did as well before Maduro found it inconvenient.

Most countries do.

👍

Seems weird because we don't have a limit then!

Although it appears most of Europe has no limit either.

New president just stands down on day 1 and let's in the VP

Let's be honest here, Vance is an opportunistic little weasel who has loyalty to one person...himself. do you honestly think, having been sworn in as president, he'd step aside and let trump take over again...not a chance. He thinks trump is as idiotic as we do. And has said as much in the past.

And even if it's not vance, noone is going to vacate the most powerful position on earth on the behest of that senile orange clown

I'd like to think given the state the US will be in in 4 years trump would have no chance even if he was allowed to run. But that would be ignoring the high possibility of election fraud.

Given recent history a minimum term might seem more appropriate 😀

I doubt they will need to resort to fraud, they will just legalize the corruption and steal the election perfectly legally.

Could trump become vice president under someone then stab him/her in the back and get back in that way.

Yes, nothing in the constitution that prevents that

I think no. The stand as a VP candidate you need to be eligible to be President, so all the considerations that apply to the presidential candidate apply to the VP candidate also.

The more convoluted route is after the VP the next heartbeat away from the president is Speaker - so currently Mike Johnson is 3rd in line if Trump and Vance get eaten by a hippo. Trump wouldn't be precluded from being Speaker for that scenario, but the roll of president falling to him rather than him winning it wouldn't appeal to him. And he'd also have to do the work of running for senate, being a senator and so on and he'd have no interest in that.

I think it's a moot point though. Trump sees everything as a popularity contest. He'd rather stay president forever if he could than face a vote to remain as president - if he could see a way to do it there'd just be no election.

Failing that though I think he'd rather go out as a 'winner' than face a public vote again risk coming out the loser again.

Indeed - we should have been compelled to keep Truss in post for a mandatory 5 years 🙂

It's probably going to be irrelevant anyway. Trump is an overweight 80 year old. Even with the best healthcare money can buy, I reckon there is a 50% chance he'll be dead by the time the next election cycle comes round.

His replacement may not be any better mind you..

Was going to say exactly the same thing... The USA will have been politically torn to shreds by then... The damage will be and somewhat already is done, with the bonfire of laws, government departments etc. There's plenty of equally diabolical Republicans that can take his place, even if they are not as openly evil as Trump, and quite a few who are!

So whether the next republican candidate is Trump or A.N.Other, is almost a moot point.

Yep. I'm not sure even Overton saw his window applying to straight up idiocy, lies and flooding the zone with shit. But it has happened and it is becoming normalised.

Social media and its ability to isolate people of low intellect whilst convincing them they are informed has played a huge role.

Trumps eyes didnt appear as being congruent with what he said when denying he was concerned that two close allies Japan and South Korea had made agreements for closer trading with China. With the new Chinese military drills around Taiwan today too - I think more switched on Republicans may be ensuring their concerns regarding the USA`s continued deterioration in the sphere of influence in that part of the world is getting to Trump .. Trump cant be as dumb as he appears, so I`m guessing he changes his mind on the severity of his tariffs, and makes bold statements - but puts a date when they will start sometime in the future where he can delay them or simply deny he ever said it.

I think that’s the big problem, hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

I do think they will struggle thou without the charisma of Trump.

IMHO Trump needs to be in power or they will just keep going after him legally and he loves the attention of  signing an EO every day and doing pressers and oh yeah he did start an insurrection last time so some mad s… going off isn’t exactly going to be a surprise.

I strongly suspect Trump will die at some point just before the end of his second term. He'll be resurrected and proclaim himself Jesus the Lord and saviour, and that is the key to running a third term as scr potus.

I can foresee a situation similar to Putin and Medvedev, where a Putin-approved candidate will run with the explicit purpose of nominally holding office, but the reins of power remaining with Trump.

Having said that, Trump is barely holding the reins of power now, as long as he gets his revenge on his enemies, he is content to let the people around him have their project 25. So it would be Stephen Miller telling Trump what to tell the new guy to do. Fun times.

This is very explicitly a crime and was clearly documented, so it will be very interesting to see what happens here. I am not sure how far he can stretch his version of the Edinburgh Defence.

It looks like Trump and Co couldn’t give a flying * about ‘The Law’ and what is or isn’t legal.

They clearly don’t think any of that particular nonsense, which is illegal and unconstitutional applies to them and his mates

I’d love to say that once they realise the stupidity of all this, they’ll reject it, but then Nigel Farage and the Brexit *-wits still maintain it was a great ide, despite us costing us 4% of our GDP

Looked at from Farage's point of view, it still is a great idea. It's kept him in clover for nine years and will continue to do so for the rest of his days.

Not seen it from an official news source but seems one of those people deported to the horrific gang prison without legal process may have been sent "in error".

Horrific for him and his family, but lawyers will be queuing up to represent him and serves as a reminder to Amerricans that legal process exists for a reason, and it could be them next.

It’s probably more the misuse of social media by the owners or people with an agenda.

I think in the early naive days it was fine and probably served a good but then the monetising of everything and the realisation that you could could collect data on a user and use that to target for advertising or pushing a viewpoint and sell this access to people who want to push an agenda to a specific demographic.

IMHO the monetising of the news seems to have had another bad effect of killing off real reporting and just news forwarding to get clicks and income and for this Trump is the perfect ‘news’ creator.

Trumps constant craving of attention and being the news makes him the perfect content provider to feed other content providers to keep flooding us with more daily stories about what he’s said to generate more revenue via clicks.
(unfortunately the good actors also keep flooding stories which encourages the bad actors to also flood stories  with and the whole circus rolls on with stuff that was important basically drowned)

There’s also that slight problem that some of them weren’t even arrested for any crime , other than being Venezuelan and then actually throwing them in prison in another country as opposed to deporting to their own country. 🙁

Let alone being incarcerated with a load of real gang members.

I reckon the whole modern shit-storm is due to social media.  And I'm really not one for simplistic explanations or conspiracies.

It's a process that has been accelerated by social media but it started in the 90s. And it's sort of a conspiracy in the sense that the drive towards polarisation was a planned act.  It was Newt Gingrich that started the process of polarisation and away from Partisanship. Compared to Reagan's 'We don't have enemies, we have opponents' stance. Gingrich peppered the discourse with words like 'Traitor' and 'Treason' when referring to the opposing party. And he'd provide phrasebooks to new congress and senate candidates briefing them on how to do the same. With the advent of CSPAN - the live broadcast from the capitol - Gingrich realised that those cameras run and broadcast all the time, and were fixed, and focused on whoever was at the mic. There was no wide shot of the room. So he'd go in when there wasn't a session running and give these long accusatory tirades against the democrat party - accusations that the democrat party seemingly had not answer to defence to -  and viewers wouldn't be aware that he was actually having an argument with an empty room.

I came across a really stark example of that journey towards polarisation recently. When Bret Kavenagh was nominated to the Supreme Court the senate voted 50 votes to 48 to confirm him - basically splitting exactly down party lines. And thats exactly what we expect from us politics at present - them and us.  When Ruth Bader-Ginsburg's nomination was voted on in the early 90s, the house at the time was split 57-43... the votes for her were 96-3, in other words, almost all of the Republican Party at the time voted to confirm a democratic president's nominee.

Previously at Clarence Thomas's confirmation - he'd been a more contentious pick by Bush, not least because he was pretty young - but the votes for and against him were a mix of Republican and Democrat.

Trump absolutely loves this, he is in his happy place. He is bullying, thinks he looks powerful, he is inviting countries to come to him and beg. He thinks he looks masterful, decisive, clever and reigning like a king. I suspect this is exactly what he was like as a failing businessman and how he dealt with his suppliers.

I think it is too big a risk to think this new USA will go away at the end of Trumps term. Much better that all of the impacted countries get together and agree a trade deal that specifically excludes the US and makes it much cheaper to trade outside of the US. Sod it, lets encourage a trade war with US but counter this by making them the small people missing out on the much bigger deal

At this point I just think everyone should be doing everything possible to split away form US economically, militarily, diplomatically and morally.

A male panda holding hands with a male tiger, clearly an abomination in the eyes of god, deportation isn't strong enough only ritual sacrifice will satisfy gods and Trumps vengeance!

I think that reality is sinking in. The US doesn't want you to bake croissants and eat them

A State Department spokesperson said Trump welcomes recent efforts from European allies to "strengthen their defense capabilities and take responsibility for their own security," but warned against creating new barriers that exclude U.S. companies from European defense projects.
