I got the old hi fi separates dug out from the spare room and got it successfully wired up and playing - NAD, Dual, Monitor/ Audio 25yr old system (god I am getting old!).

After much persuasion the old Dual turntable crackled into life (literally, with much sparking and smells of hot electrics sparking until the turntable moved).

Both son and Daughter looking in wonder as this big flat disc of plastic could be spun around and a needle could convert a groove of plastic with an imprint of a recording into great music.

Yes I know the i-pod on its docking station downstairs can pump out better quality music but there is something about sticking an old album onto the turntable and listening to it (scratches, crackles and all) that is therapeutic.

Now to dig out all those old albums 🙂

local politician?

what is this LP you speak of?

why would you run a needle over a cd? i dont get how that would make it play noise, i always avoid scratching them!

What's the difference between a Loud Pensioner and a Shouty Pensioner?

I love that they still use the sound of a needle being pulled off a record at the moment of the comic reveal in movie trailers (when they show you that Adam sandler and Cameron Diaz have turned into dogs or something)

I wonder if the kids watching have any clue where that noise comes from

my oldest who is 7, loves playing my LP's, which she plays on my old nad/revolver system.

I have not let her lose on my complete collection yet, so she is slowly working through Nivana/U2/Simple Minds, the dammage to her music tastes will last with here forever 😉

My youngest mind, has destroyed two cartridges and two belt drives to the deck, so far!

My son struggled to cope with the fact there was music on both sides of the disc.

I've got about 500 LP's and he keeps rifling trying to see what I've got.

My 4 year old has been attempting to scratch DJ for a year or two now. He quite regularly goes to the record rack in the lounge to pick some old 90s dance classic...

...he still prefers Johnny Cash tho'

Mine said "Daddy, look at the size of that CD". Of course their kids will all say "Daddy, what's a CD?". Their only interaction with cassettes has been stories in the car, prior to MP3.

As we walked past the fancy tap shop next to the post office yesterday I commented to my youngest on the 'size of that CD rack' (it was one of those funny towel warming things, which looked like a giant wire CD rack) she replied 'Don't be silly it's for records'.

So apparently my ten year old knows what vinyl is, even though I don't have any.

My lad was playing hide and seek in the eaves cupboard in his loft room and they started to pull all my LP's out from the crates i tucked away. There was much mocking and laughing generally at the content. That was until they stumbled upon my old copy of Electric Ladyland then they soon shut up 😉

Is that because they think Hendrix is cool, or they like the album cover?

Ours certainly know what vinyl is, but despite being regularly surrounded by some of the finest DJ's in the North West, many of em from the original Sett End / Blackburn era, they still only listen to Justin Bieber and the Saturdays.... Grrrr

My 5 and 3 year olds like chosing from the record box. Culture Shock went down well!

My daughter calls them "big cd's" which is quite funny. I let my kids listen to my old Linn LP12 and they much prefer the sound from lp's to cd's and my cd player isn't exactly bad - a Linn CD12. Looks like I've educated them well

Funnily enough I just asked my 8year old what they are, he said "old fashioned DVDs" 🙂

My kids do but their friends don't.

I have a lovely Michel turntable and I aint ever getting rid. I love my ipod but the sound isn't nearly as good as vinyl.

That's just good parenting. We had Crass/Citizen Fish on the way to school...might put on Go Wild later for him...
